Well, there was a "Sir" George Ripley - he was an Augustinian, canon of Bridlington and reputed to have been an alchemist - during the 15th century. His name may have derived from the North Yorkshire town of Ripley. However, there are other towns named Ripley in the UK, notably in Hampshire, Surrey and Derbyshire.
