Sylvia,

You seem to be the only person on GR who has this name listed

Have checked the census on Findmypast from 1861 to 1901 and not getting any matches for this name.

Ancestry is not working at the moment.

No matches for births or marriages on IGI either

I always thought of Arthur Norton as my grand father, but now it turns out that my grandfather is this Percy. This is from my mothers birth certificate. Florence Violet Shacklady. 13.9.1901. Her mother Florence Louisa, I thought was a Shacklady was in fact a Ritchie. From Saral Ritchie, Landlady of the Seven Stars pub in London. Complicated!!!!!! Sylvia

RE Percy Shacklady...I have looked on the information I have on my family and cannot find a Percy or anyone with a second initial P. Could this be a nickname like some people are known by.? My father was always called Mac, nobody knew his real name ... Philip. Sylvia

Florence was born in Bethnal Green c1882 according to the 1901 census.

That corresonds to this birth:

Births Sep 1881
Shacklady Florence Bethnal Green 1c 198

What makes you think her maiden name was Ritchie and what does this mean: "From Saral Ritchie, Landlady of the Seven Stars pub in London."?

Yes that is them. My mother Florence Violet born 1901, Florence Louisa [my grandmother] and Arthur Norton married 1904. F.L.'s mother was Sarah Ritchie who later married William Shacklady. On my mothers B.C. .... F.V. is called 'Shacklady formerly Ritchie' . F.V.'s father is Percy Shacklady on the B.C. Complicated. I have searched as far as I can, no Percy's. Is it possible to put any old name on a B.C. If so why not Smith or Jones? Or are we keeping it in the family! Sylvia

Sarah Ritchie was a publican and she had the Seven stars pub [in MIle End I think]. Also William Shacklady had a pub in London. Many thanks to all who replied Sylvia

I can only assume FL was pretending she was married when she registered the birth. Perhaps FV's father's forename was actually Percy but I doubt he was a Shacklady.

It appears that Florence Louisa made it appear she was married when she registered her daughters birth giving the maiden name of Richie which was her mothers maiden name.

Do you have her marriage cert to Arthur Norton?

There's a Percy Edwards a few doors down from Florence in 1901 and he's also 19. Something to think about.

Thankyou Rose. I have looked at Percy and it seems likely. But the guy on Mum's B.C. is a master butcher and Percy is some sort of Labourer. I am wondering if the B.C. can be believed. Can people put down things that are not true. I suppose so, who is going to check? But thankyou for looking. Sorry it has taken a while to get back to you. Sylvia
