Sheehy is from the gaelic MacSithaigh (can't remember the exact spelling). It means 'man of peace' ie gallowglass someone employed as a mercenary to bring about 'peace'. Originally a Scottish name the Earl of Desmond in 15-something paid a tribe of MacSithaigh's to fight the English in the Kerry region of Ireland. They travelled over with their families. I believe they won the battle and were given a vast acreage in Kerry as payment. I'm doing all this from memory, so will have to look it up once again -- If any of it's wrong. I'll correct it asap. Best, Lorrie Sheehy
