I can not find a birth or christening for a Margaret Smith born about 1850 in Slainsfield Northumberland. I have her marriage certificate at St Nicholas church Durham 30 11 1872 to Robert Rowland. It lists her father as Ambrose Smith a farmer, her residence before marriage Sadler Street Durham. I can'tt find her in any census before but no problems after her marriage Something seems very wrong anyone got any ideas?

FannyByGaslight Report 7 Oct 2010 22:18

I give up,I can find nothing at all and Margaret Smiths abound on freebmd.

Does anyone know which reg district Ford or Slainsford Northumberland come under?

Oh ..and to reply on here you need to just click on the purple reply button at the top of the post Janette...

Maybe a call to the reg office that covers that district asking for a search for her with the fathers details, which luckily are not John Smith...

patchem Report 7 Oct 2010 22:47

Think Slainsfield comes under Cornhill which comes under Berwick.........

Births Jun 1849
SMITH Margaret Berwick 25 28

Births Mar 1853
Smith Margaret Berwick 10b 267

If definitely not showing, then possibles include:
1) Illegitimate and has invented Father
2) Father died and Mother remarried, and Margaret showing on census under new father's name, until reverts to original name on marriage.

This one on 1851 is interesting as one of Margarets daughters was called Joanna
And on one of the census after she marries she says she is born ..Ford..

It does look like the invention of a fathers name ladies,or she knew his name,I mean to pick Ambrose and not a plain John or such, says to me she may have known his name.
My ilegit nan put her father down on her marriage with his correct first names, but gave him her birth Surname...

Fanny by Gaslight Thank you for so many leads and the Joanna name is well worth me having a good look at. There is a birth in the Glendale district I never thought of ringing the reg. office there. Thanks for all your help. Illegitamcy work houses all crossed my mind it is a mysterybut one I want to solve as it is my Great Grandmother.

1911 it says Margaret Rowland born 1850 Ford City Northumberland which I think is about 13 miles from Berwick.

All way through census's she is born 1850,so do we take it as correct.

Are there any deaths which give her year of birth??

Maryb

If her mum was Joanna 1823 daughter of isabella Smith on 1851 census is this her mum 1841

1841 D14 > 3 Ford Glendale Northumberland
Andrew Smith born @ 1801 a coal miner death ?? J/A/S 1850 Glendale V25 P167.
Isabella 1796
Ann 1835
Isabella 1825
William 1831
Mary 1833 the one on 1851 with Joanna and Margaret.

I am putting this message here as I had to try and put the two together so I knew which post it was about as I have and do answer many as do others and it was a fair while back Janette.
Also it means it will pop up to the top of peoples threads that have added to this and they may have some more ideas..

You gave me a lot of help here but she is still a mystery, I got her death certificate she died 22 6 1921 and it gives her age as 71 so still points to 1850 as a possible birth date. Have no idea if I can go any further now. Jan

Jan
Did you try asking for a search of her birth from the reg office? If so what did they come up with please?Did they find the one from 1851 census that I posted so you can discount it if nothing else...?

Did you send for the most likely birth that Patchem posted?

Births Jun 1849
SMITH Margaret Berwick 25 28

The reg office were helpful but the father's name is the problem, did she make it up or is it possible somewhere at the time of marriage it was written incorrectly, I don't know how to see the original if it exists still.
,I know Banns were called. I do know the family always said she was born on the Flodden field battle site, which is Branxton but I can't find anything there either
Jan

Please can you reply on here Jan so that bits and pieces are not in my inbox but all in the place where everyone can see them and may be able to help...Thank you

Did you ask the reg office to look for her with no father on the birth cert?

The 1871 census posted by BatMansDaughter certainly looks to be her with that birth place.

I really think that her father was either made up for respectability on marriage OR she knew his name was Ambrose and gave him her surname Smith for it to look right(just as my Nan did on her marriage cert in the 1930s)
