I have an article in an old newspaper about a James W Spinks
It is a middlesborough paper - and it says he is a steward onboard a steamer. The paper is dated 1892.
I thought is such an unusual name - Would you like me to write it out for you?

Hi Ann, the only definite information is the marriage certificate stating age 21. So she would have been born 1867/68. The census gives Walsall Staffs as place, but...

Hi Ria, yes please. Have been searching for years. Managed to find the Smiths for a few hundred years, but no luck with Spinks so far.

Hi Pam, Not sure if he belongs to you : -
North Country News .
The North-Eastern Daily Gazette (Middlesbrough, England), Monday, December 19, 1892

A SMUGGLER'S STRANGE DEFENCE
At West Hartlepool today, James W Spinks steward on board the steamer Alicia, was charged with smuggling 41/2 lbs of tobacco and 3/4lb of cigars = Customs Oficer Soulsby proved finding the smuggled goods beneath a false floor on board the vessel. The Defendant did not deny the charge, he said he accidentally came across the false floor and believing that it had previously been used for smuggling purposes, he was unable to resist the temptation to conceal some tobacco and cigars which he intended for Christmas consumption. He was ordered to pay single value duty and costs amounting in all to £3. 3s 10d or one months hard labour.

Not useful in a dates sort of way, but a snapshot in time.

Hi, Do not know if there is a connection.
Have a marriage certificate for great granparents.
Ggranmother was Emma Wilson Spinks born c1868 in Walsall.
Her father was James Wilson Spinks
I have not been able to trace them or any of their family.
Do you know of any family members with Wilson as there middle name?

Hi Everyone,
Someone has put Emma Wilson Spinks b.1868 on Ancestry and I no longer have a subscription. It is on "Smith family tree" which is promising since she married Joe Smith.
Please could someone have a quick look.

Thanks, Pam

Hi. On the Smith tree on Ancestry, this is the info I can see. Let me know if you need any more than this (not sure what you are looking for). There are another couple of trees which also seem to have the same person.

Emma Wilson Spinks b. 1868 Lincolnshire
Married Joseph Smith in Opensham (think this is Manchester?) on 2 April 1889
Death in Yarmouth in 1950

Parents are Thomas Spinks (b. 1833) and Charlotte Farnsworth (b. 1835).

Showing as children Edward (b. 1892, d. 1961), Eliza Jane (b. 1894, d. 1953), Joseph (b. 1896) and Mary (b. 1899, d. 1980)

This is the info that is registered on the Ancestry tree for the 1881 census which confirms parents but they don't match to your parents names in initial post?

Thanks Keeley,

I am even more confused now.
My Emma Wilson Spinks married Joseph Smith on 2nd Apr 1889 at St Barnabus, Openshaw, which is Manchester. Have certificate.
She died in Manchester just before the 1911 census.
Father: James Wilson Spinks. This is from the marriage certificate.
Birthplace: Walsall,Staffordshire from 1891 census.
Children: Edward, Eliza Jane (my ggran) Joseph, Mary & James
So still not sure if this is a relation or not.

Thanks for looking. Pam
