Find Ancestors

Hello, my name is Simon and I need help locating the parents of Joseph Steel, born in 1797 In Stapleton Cumberland England.
He married Ann Steel in 1819 and had several children including Walter Steele, born 1837.

His brother was James Steel, born 1790.

I know that Joseph Steel is located on several public and private trees on the site. If you know of his ancestors and parents, please let me know, any information will be greatly appreciated.

Yes thats it. The golden nugget I am looking for though is Joseph Steel's parents. Please help, I am just eighteen years old and non of my family have offered to help, getting back to 1797 on my own is an achievement in its self, but I can't go further

Well done in getting back so far with your family.

To find the parents of Joseph Steel you need to access the church records of wherever he might have been baptised. The place of his marriage might help, or the place where his children were baptised. Once you have established that, look on the LDS site, and if that pulls up a possibly baptism, you can order the film or fiche to view locally which might give more information, but might not. If the baptism is not there, you will likely have to visit the depository for the church records, and wade through them to find a likely birth, which you might then wade through to find a likely mariage.

I am afraid you are now into the realm of original parish registers.

Hi Simon. Just to put a small spanner in the works? I have down Ann as Ann RIDLEY of Arthuret. rather than Badley? I would normally take it I was wrong, (and did indeed change my info after seeing yesterdays replies). But the name Ridley also crops up on Ann's death cert. I thought maybe her daughter 'Mary' married a cousin on her mother's side? Just a strange coincidence the name I thought was her maiden name cropping up on her death cert.
Anyone confirm my info or put me right please?
As for Josephs parents ... I've a bad feeling the records for Stapleton parish church pre 1800's were destroyed! Let's hope someone can also put me right on that one?

Ann Ridley/Badley is the same person, why I do not know.

I know that Joseph Steel is on some of the private family trees on ancestry, but I can't access them.

It shouldn't be too hard to find them, since the parish records go back to 1600's I have found some Steels going back to that time, but I don't know if they are related.

Even if the records were destroyed, we can still trace them.

Once again I thank people so far in helping me with my problems, but like I said, I cant go further without Josephs parents, even if just one is discovered, I can use the information to find the other spouse.

1841 census for Ann Steel puts her in Park Broom with children Mary, John, Walter and Jonathan. I cross referenced this with Ann's 1861 census record which shows Jonathan born in Park Broom. Also found Mary in the IGI / British Isles as being Christened 06 Sept 1831 Crosby Upon Eden ... parents Joseph and Ann Steel. Other children that I have for them are Thomas, James, Hannah, Joseph, John, Walter and Jonathan. If you have more to add to that let me know? Good luck with your search and thanks for your help :-)

Hello starr1, thank for the information, unfortunately, this Joseph Steel isn't the one I am related to. Joseph was born in Stapleton Cumberland, not Yorkshire.

I'm a little bemused.

Even if the records were destroyed, we can still trace them.

How?

I do not know, but somewhere, his parents are listed because my aunt before she died of Leukemia, she got my family back to 1580, but for some reason, I have no idea where her notes are.

which states that parish records of baptisms and marriages in Stapleton 1725-1812 are not on the IGI. It would seem there was only one church in Stapleton.

I think you will have to visit the Carlisle office or pay them to search if you can't get there yourself. Some offices will do searches free, though many charge nowadays. If you are visiting, best to check first that the records still exist.

You say your aunt went back to 1520, but she may have had gaps and had to make some assumptions. I must advise it is very difficult to go back so far with any degree of reliability unless the name is very unusual or the family have connections with nobility. I managed to go back to about 1050 with one branch of my family but only because in the early 1800s one ancestor was a vicar, and his father was an MP, and further back there were Earls and Knights with lots of information available from old historical books. But for most of us, back to the late 1700s is the best we can do. Even with actual parish records (if they exist) the information can be sketchy, you might find the baptism didn't take place close to the date of birth (so you aren't sure if it's the right one), or no baptism at all, or more than one baptism with no means of knowing which is correct (back then, the mother was rarely mentioned, just "George and Mrs Steel"), and finding a marriage of George might be just as difficult. You might also be surprised as to how much movement around the country there was, even in those days, so although Joseph thinks he was born in Stapleton, he might not have been.

Depending on when your aunt did her research, there might not have been so much information online, so she may have been basing it on supposition.

There are four trees on here with Joseph, one is yours and one is Annette's - have you contact the others? (Fay and Robert). Ancestry has two public trees (neither has parents for Joseph) and at least three private trees. Do you have Ancestry membership in order to contact them?

I must warn that not everyone's research is as accurate as I would wish it to be for myself. Often somebody decides that the parents of Joseph Steel are George and Mary, and everyone else sticks this in their trees looking as if they have researched it and verified it for themselves - so please take care when relying on other trees until you determine the reliability of the researcher.

So, it's off to Carlisle methinks, but if you can't get any further pat yourself on the back for what you have done so far, knowing it is accurate, and that most of us are in the same position.

Hello Margaret, wow you sound like a cracking good family historian, what you are telling me is sound and correct.

But I have no doubt in mind that Joseph was born in Stapleton, I have checked and checked and it is confirmed, I only put down information on my tree that is correct.

Yes I have contacted Robert, but he is not replying. I wish to contact the private trees, but I need a subscription and unfortunately, I can't afford it.
I have no idea who Josephs parents are, but I have a suspicion that his father was named either James or Joseph, since four of my ancestors share the name through father and grandfather. It was common in those days for a father to naem his son after him, one example on my tree is Walter Steele, born in 1837, his son was named Walter Steele, born 1873.

I am definitely not a good cracking family historian, still bumbling along and making mistakes. But I have done a lot of research on line, and know that the time has come for you to look at parish records.

Yes, we all know the trend for naming sons after fathers. Can be quite useful if the father is called Aloysius, but Joseph doesn't have the same advantages.

Still no luck trying to find Joseph's parents. It as if the line has just disappeared, with baptisms from 1725 to 1813 missing, it seems likely :-(
