Hi Debbie.
I went to a family history workshop on Saturday, run at the main library here in Birmingham. The genealogist who ran it was an absolute mine of information. I too have ancestors who lived far away from where I am, and she suggested if I want any local info to contact the library there - apparently Genuk have a list. It might also be worth seeing if there is such a course/person you can make use of near where you live.
I think we forget about libraries sometimes - they seem to be the centre for local history etc.
Also, what about voter lists? I know nothing about these really, but I bet someone on this site will, perhaps you should post again on the records office section.

Also - there is a Glamorgan family history society, website www.glamfhs.org with some contact emails - these people may well be able to help.
Good luck!

hello yes the full address given on his birth cert is:
28 North Road, Bargoed. in the sub district of gelligaer, merthyr tydfil, glamorgan. apparently picking my aunties memory his sister lived there until the seventies when contact was lost, and her name was nancy harris, she married wyndham and had 2 children bernice and clinton, but so not know where they are or if they are still alive, so that was more than i knew before but that is all, apparently did not have much to do with them and once my grandfather died contact stopped altogether.

Debbie,

How do you know your Grandfather lived in Bargoed (1911) was that the address given on his Birth Certificate?

There is more than one Brithdir in Wales but one is in S.Wales not too far from Bargoed.

Debbie - try putting on search (as I did) "bargoed history society" and you will find a website or two which look promising.
Local resources are probably your best bet. The library site looks good.
The following person is listed (family history society, Caerphilly):
Mr. Roy Walters
23 Kings Hill
Hengoed CF8 7NH

Good luck! Let us know if you get somewhere. (I can give you the rather lengthy website address for the above if you want).

Hi Debbie! It's me - the one who suggested you post here! Thought I'd see how you're getting on.
I've found a william owen jones living with mary ann jones in the 1901 census. They were in Bangor however.
If you want to rummage around for free try freebmd and familysearch.

PS North Road Bargoed Caerphilly exists - look on google map

- and since Bedwelty reg district was formed from Crickhowell, the birth registration in 1885 might fit? (out of 113 possibles between 1880 and 1890! - looks like tracing the line is going to take a lot of luck and perseverance - hope it goes well).

[Ed - rule out that Crickhowell one - the baby died in 1885]

There are a lot of William Owen Jones marriages too! Free BMD offers this one:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Jun 1907
EDWARDS Thomas Bedwellty 11a 157
JONES William Owen Bedwelty 11a 157
PRICE Mary Annie Bedwelty 11a 157
WATKINS Sarah Jane Bedwelty 11a 157

Asking Multimap to find Bedwelty, it suggests a blank space just over the river from Bargoed - zooming in as far as possible, there is a Bedwelty Road just there. The registration district details on Free BMD show that it is around Ebbw Vale.

I've no idea though whether this could just be happenstance through it being fairly common names?

Entering 'Brithdir' as reg'n district in the search on Ancestry produces no results.

Which county is it?

Have you checked on the 1901 census website to find out if the address existed in 1901?

If you look for the marriage of his parents, the cert will tell you their ages, plus the names and occupations of each of their fathers...........

This info should enable you to locate the people on 1901 census...........and earlier
