Deborah

Is it the short version of his birth cert you have? My Mum and Dad only have that version.

I think it was cheaper as the time and a lot of people went for it as they didn't have much money.

If so you will need to get a full version for the parents names.

Hi Deborah

His birth certificate should have the date of birth, name and place of birth, parents names, often the father's occupation and the person who registered it etc. It will say "certified copy of an entry of birth" on the top and "Given at the General Register Office" It will be very official looking and should have all the details on it. It sounds like you haven't actually got his birth certificate.
Kind regards
Belinda

How did you get his birth certificate so fast??

Did you apply to www.gro.gov.uk, pay £7, and get the certificate through the mail??

That is the only way you can see what is on a certifcate .... birth, marriage or death.

NONE of the information is available on the web.

Deborah do you have his birth cert (actual piece of paper in your hand) or have you just looked up his birth on the internet?

Belinda

Belinda Report 6 Feb 2008 00:46

The birth certificate should have the parents names on it? Are there not even any names? That would be very unusual!!!

Do you know who he married? If you have the birth certificate of their child (whichever one was your grandad or grandma) then that should have his wife's maiden name on it.

You can then look for the marriage.

Hi Deborah

You need to go to the following website:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Type in your great grandfathers name and the range of years he was born and hold your breathe. I've typed in Thomas Hall and there are dozens and dozens of them so you would have to know a middle name and a possible place of birth to narrow it down. Then once you have the correct one, write down the vol and page number and go to the following website to order it:

www.gro.gov.uk

Hope this helps
