The Edwin G James on the 1901 was in Barry (where I was born) & his Dad's name was Edwin.

There are no mines in Barry, it was a docks town.

A possible but he's a bit old, was his middle name definitely Gerald?

Hi Claire, It is a good possibility especially with the middle name Gerald..fathers christian name is the same..Llanwonno area..Glamorgan is familar with my family history. I have found on many of the certificates that ages have been wrongly given so this may be the case with Evan G James age.

I have just waded through paper and found Elsie May James obit notice..it is hard to read but gives thanks to brothers in laws Ernest James of Cefn Hengoed ...William James of Maesycwmmer and David James of Cefn Hengoed..the census of Claire and Christine of Portugal has listed a David, Ernest and William which could be the siblings of Evan James

It seems more likely that it is the last one that Claire and I found as his father's occupation is coal hewer, none of them have a middle name listed.
