Buy the marriage cert, if you haven't already got it.

You will then know how old he was...plus his father's details

Looking for someone based on guesswork is not advisable.

Have you looked on the birth marriage and death indexes for the family? Some have been transcribed on www.freebmd.org.uk mostly complete up until the 1920s.

Post that time then you would have to manually search the index pages which have been scanned in - you have to search by surname, year and look at each quarter. These are viewable on www.ancestry.co.uk and www.findmypast.com - both are pay per view.

When you find what you want it will give you reference numbers that you can use to order the certificate via the GRO - www.gro.gov.uk

My advice is to always start with what you know and work your way backwards - never jump back with guesswork.

People on here are always glad to help so if you ever need any pointers just ask.

FamilyFogey Report 20 Mar 2008 00:19

Gordon - if you go to the website i mentioned - www.gro.gov.uk and follow the link for 'Order a Certificate Online'

Make sure you select marriage in England and Wales and the year it occured - 1901, then click that the GRO ref is known.

Then follow the next instructions to add your delivery information, then the next screen is where you put the grooms name and then the district and quarter the event took place then the volume number and page number - so vol - 9c page num 1218.

It will cost you £7 and it should arrive in a few days - after Easter!

freeBMD ?
and the names chesterfield?

sorry about this but seem to be getting out of my depth and any help REALLY is appreciated.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 20 Mar 2008 00:54

FreeBMD is a website that has birth, marriage and deaths listed but only up to about 1920 as it is transcribed by volunteers.

Chesterfield is the registration district - this covers many towns and villages - where the birth, marriage or death took place.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Registration of BMD's began in 1837 but did not become compulsory until the mid 1870's

Gordon - perhaps you should read some of the 'hints and tips for newbies' threads that are permanently on the first pages of threads on here. They can give a lot of help and advice which can help out the beginner.

My top tips are:

When starting - always work from yourself backwards, never make assumptions and be as methodical as you can be.

Ask all family members what they know - you never know what someone has that could help - be it original certificates or other documents like wills etc - or perhaps someone else has already done some research.

Find out where you need to look to find certain things - maybe even look into buying a book about tracing your family tree - a good one for beginners with a range of info that explains things step by step. Also perhaps look at getting a book with lists of websites for the genealogist - Amazon is a good place to start. Also many family tree magazines can be bought from WHSmith and often they print a section for help for beginners - the same article every week to ensure that people can learn the basics.

Remember that when researching in England/Wales that Civil registration of Births Marriages and Deaths began in July 1837 but that it was not compulsary to register a birth until 1875 so sometimes its not uncommon to not find what you are looking for.

From 1866 age at death was given on the registers, and from 1969 it changed to show the deceased's date of birth.

From the end of 1911 mothers maiden name was shown on the birth registers.

From 1912 spouses surname was shown on the marriage indexes.

Sites like FreeBMD are a project to transcribe these indexes - so when looking for a marriage pre 1912 you can view the possible spouse by clicking on the page number - which will show you all the people whose marriage was registered on the same page - mostly there are four names - two men and two women - depending on the size of the district and how many marriages may have been recorded on that page.

The censuses were every ten years - the earliest of which was 1841 (there were some before that but were mainly just statistical data and of no genealogical value - but sometimes you can be lucky and find some earlier ones with proper information on). The 1841 census rounded many ages up or down - some ages are right but most need to be confirmed by checking parish registers or later censuses. It also does not show relationship to the head of household or the place of birth - other than to say if it was in or out of the county or from another place like Scotland/Ireland etc.

Later censuses give more information.

The censuses are searchable online - 1841-1901 on www.ancestry.co.uk and 1841, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 are on www.findmypast.com - who are also currently working on getting 1851 and 1901.

Other sites have them too - all are pay per view but some have been transcribed for free on www.freecen.rootsweb.org.uk

Another huge tip is Google - its always worth searching on Google for something - it is a great tool!

Another suggestion is to ask for help like you did tonight - these boards are full of people willing to help and also try www.rootschat.com - another group of nice people!

Also another note for the BMD indexes is that when searching on sites like Ancestry or Findmypast - 1837-1983 are images of scanned pages of the registers. From 1984 all BMDs were computerised so therefore no scrolling through pages - you can just type in what you are looking for and search. FreeBMD has been doing a grand job of transcribing these indexes and is so far up to the 1920s and is easy to use.

Then when you get back to pre-1837 you will have to rely on Parish Registers of Christenings, Marriages and Burials. The Latter Day Saints have transcribed many parish registers and these are searchable on www.familysearch.org - under International Genealogical Index (IGI). They ideally should all be double checked against the actual register - often found on fiche or originals at the local records offices. Be wary of 'member submitted' records as they tend to have errors and trust the 'batch number' or 'film number' entries more - but even so - they should all be checked.

Also another good tip is to look for Wills - some can be found on Documents Online on the National Archives - pre 1858 wills. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Also worth checking with local offices for wills.

Good Luck Gordon!
