hi

Having a bit of difficulty and hope that someone with more savvy can help us.

Hubby's g-grandad Samuel Barton married to Helen Smith (don't know anything more about their past or when they were married). Had 13 children? 1 definate is Betty born 1925.

Betty told us that her Dad committed suicide when she was 8 (although we also had this written down from earlier chats as 1930!)

having searched indexes in Yorkshire area (the family lived in Doncaster) from 1929 to 1933 we can't find Samuel's 'death' anywhere!!!

Are we just being silly and missing something?

Would records of the day be kept somewhere - ie.inquest? ANY help gratefully received.

I cannot even find a Betty birth!!

Inquest records may well be held at the local records office or library, but mostly they don't survive.

Well done on your above work!
I've looked and looked for a marriage for Samuel and Helen - I think you're on to a winner with this.
A death for George S Barton needs to be looked for. The use of his middle name could well be why his death has been so hard to find.

Well done again!

Either one of these is likely to be his birth...

....and *probably* him in 1901.... all the other George S Barton's i can see are married already.... Unless your George was married twice?

This could be him. Although just seen the above possible birth and he wouldn't fit with him.

George S Barton, death reg Q1, 1933, district of Hull, aged 46 - 9d 421

Helen

You have to remember a death record is only as good as the person giving the info... if someone doesn't know the right data then this incorrect data is recorded on the death cert as fact...

Sadly it happens all the time..........

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 30 Mar 2008 20:56

The best thing to do is order the marriage cert, this will give you his fathers name, you can use this for the census data.

Thanks for all the help, will try following these up, and will try to find out from Nanna if she knows any specific details.

hi

Thanks SO much for all the help people have given us on this quest!

We have a good feeling about the burial in Hyde Park as that is quite near Balby where Nanna's childhood home was - so that would tie up.

We are trying to find out if her parents were just known as Samuel and Helen but actually George Samuel and Ellen....

Going to order the death cert for George as i'm sure that will help quite a bit...

Although if he was 53 when he died then that makes him born in approx 1879 so we can start again to look for him.

Have also contacted the Doncaster archives to see if we can access the inquest records for the suicide.

Thanks again to everyone - as we really appreicate the help!
