Thank you all for the postings and info.
I have located a Death Reg.in Wigton. for a Jane Reay Dec.Quarter of 1858 (no age listed) possibility there to determine if that was "Jane" b.1856.
Could you please advise where is the best place to obtain the appropriate Marriage /Birth Certs.from? Dumfries and Galloway Reg.Office or the main Scottish Reg.Office.

Hi

I had a look at Joseph's birth certificate and according to it he did have an older sister but I can't find a record. It is possible that the birth was not recorded as reigstration was not compulsory until 1855.

I wonder if the enumerator struggled with the accent?

Grateful thanks for all the information supplied.
Interestingly I have no record of a of a "Jane" on any Cenus....
"Hilton" has proved to be an elusive one but then in later years we have an "Irving" again female !! Also disappeared without a trace....

Still cannot find Hilton?

I get the impression 'Hilton' was a pet name or a coloquial name for something else

The births are all uk?

Sadly the Eng & Wales records would not give us anything we can prove today, but it would def give you something to work on going forwards...

I couldn't find a Hilton in Scotland or England

Many thanks to you all...I think Alistair may be ahead despite the one "n" as on cross checking the 1861 Census I find there is a John Stewart aged 25yrs Visitor also listed at the same cottage....
However I am aware there is "Dornock" in the Highlands so Aberdeen could have been a possibility !! If someone is able locate the Birth Reg. of any of the children Hilton c1854 /James c.1855/Joseph c.1856 (my g.grandfather) I would be extremely grateful.

Would someone who has access to the Scottish Records kindly check for a Marriage between a William Reay/Rae and Jannet ? abt.1853 and birth of a "Hilton" Reay abt.1854 Dumfrieshire.
In 1861 I have the couple on the UK Census residing in Low Bolton Cumbria with children "Hilton" Reay aged 7 yrs.(female) James Reay 6yrs and Joseph Reay 4yrs.place of birth for all family listed as Dumfries. The 1871 Census shows place of Birth for family as Dornock...I have been unable to locate any birth record for Hilton (name unchanged on 1871 Census) or marriage for Wm and Jannet.
