It depends on where the trial took place............sentencing is carried out by the trial judge. |

Local courts could only give short sentences if the crime was serious it would go the old bailey, capable of passing a death sentence if necessary |

It would be the Durham Assizes, I think. The Assizes could certainly pass a death sentence, there'd be no need for the case to go to London. |

There were Assizes held throughout the country, usually quarterly I believe ...... and that is where the serious crimes would be dealt with. I know there were Durham Assizes, Chester Assizes, Lancaster, etc etc |
