If her husband was already dead then it might be interesting to see who registered the death. Possibly one of your husband's parents or one of their siblings.

Slough is the right area and the 1983 would be about the right time of her death.

Her husband died alot earlier than her.

Perhaps it would be worth getting the death certificate to see who registered the death. Do you think her husband died before or after her?

Perhaps they all just thought Fanny was short for Frances/Francis and just assumed that was her name (or as Angela said maybe she didn't like the name Fanny).

I would go with the birth of Fanny being right. You could order that certificate giving her parent's names as checking points. Her father's name should be on the marriage certificate.

Do you know if Slough would be the right sort of area for her death?

It could be as you say that he has it wrong Sandra. One of my cousins knows our grandmother as Eleanor as that is what she would have preferred to have been called rather than her real name which was Nellie. So his grandmother could have done the same thing.

This looks like her death (registered in the name Francis Mary):-

Francis Mary Corder - date of birth given as 25th Dec. 1901 (which would probably be registered March 1902)
March qtr. 1983, Slough, 19, 0667

Frances is the name my husband remembers for his grandmother. But he mainly refers to her by a nik name so maybe he's got it wrong.
But he remembers his grandfather dying while he was young (late 40's early 50's)
