What makes you think he was in the Navy? When do you think he married - if it was before 1837 then you won't find a reference, you need parish records.

Sue in Somerset

Sue in Somerset Report 14 May 2008 23:17

Presumably he is this one on the IGI (submitted record)

GEORGE BEANLAND
Christening: 23 APR 1809 Bradford, Yorkshire, England

Parents:
Father: JOHN BEANLAND Family

He probably married before 1837 so no civil registration

Sam
It's a bit of a hunch , some of his children appear to have been born in port areas , particularly his daughter Harriet who was born abt 1837 Chatham Kent according to census's

Sue
Yes it would have been 1837 or earllier for the marriage

Sam

Sam Report 14 May 2008 23:26

That is a BIG hunch - not everyone from a Port area was in the Navy! Have you found him on any census and if so, what is his occupation?

Debbie

Debbie Report 14 May 2008 23:28

Yes in 1 census he is listed as a shoe maker another , Chelsea pensioner
He seemed to travel quite a bit tho

Devon Dweller

Devon Dweller Report 14 May 2008 23:31

I see no evidence whatsoever of any military connection, or of him travelling at all!

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 14 May 2008 23:59

1851 gives wife and eldest daughter as born in Ireland so possibly the marriage took place over in Ireland

Debbie

Debbie Report 15 May 2008 00:07

ok maybe not it's just his children , appear to be born Chatham in Kent , Liverpool , Wakefield etc

Devon Dweller

Devon Dweller Report 15 May 2008 00:30

To be fair the mention of being a Chelsea Pensioner indicates that he spent some time in the Army.

was plain ann now annielaurie

was plain ann now annielaurie Report 15 May 2008 15:14

Chelsea Pensioner would mean that he was in the Army, not the Navy (that would be Greenwich Pensioner). All those discharged to pension before 1854 and for whom discharge papers survive are indexed by name on the National Archives Catalogue, and there is no George Beanland. So, he left after 1854 or he left before and his papers haven't survived. To find out anything about his military record, it's essential to know his regiment.
