I was wondering if anyone lived close to this Church if they'd be kind eneough to see if any of the following are buried there?
Edith Lillian Roach Died 1963 (G.Aunt)
Ernest William Roach Died 1947 (2nd Husband)
Denis Frederick Raymond Hopper 1920-1945(son from 1st marriage).
I can't find them anywhere & this is the last place local to where they lived that they could be.Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Carla.

I don't think there have been any new burials at St Mary's for some time. It's more likely that they were cremated at Hendon Crematorium.

Hi Jim,
I have 'phoned there & Golders Green & a few out lying ones-they're not there.
Hendon Crem said they'd have just made it in to the cemetry before it was 'full' if they're not there I'm a bit stuck!Thank-you.

Hi Carla.

A lot of work was done clearing Hendon Churchyard in the early 1970s and lots of gravestones were removed. It caused a lot of complaints in the area, and it may be that the church are still sensitive over this.

Before it was completed, most if not all of the gravestones were recorded by members of Hendon and District Archaeological Society. Those are the records which have been deposited in the archive at Mill Hill, but I have copies of most in my front room at this moment.
Since my earlier messages, I have been scanning through them, but could spot no record of the three people you mentioned.
There are a few other places in the area that might have been used. There are some large cemeteries iin the area, close to the A406 (North Circular Road at Finchley. These are mainly cemeteries for inner London boroughs that ran out os burial space in Victorian times - St Pancras, Islington, Marylebone, etc.
There is another large cemetery at New Southgate which is certainly a possible for Hendon. I don't have any records of the graves there.

I should be close to St Mary's in about three weeks. We have a "dig" just outside the church walls. I'll see if I can get into the churchyard and have a quick search. If I spot anything, I will send you a message.

Thanks ever so much Jim,I'd really appreciate that.
I'd really like to find them but it does get daunting 'phoning crems & cemetry's all the time.
They started moving & smashing gravestone around the Church here 'cause they were deemed 'unsafe' fortunately they were stopped but an awful lot of history was erased.
My Son goes on dig's,the last one was for a Roman Villa, what are you investigating?

We are trying to find the Saxon boundary ditch around the settlement which includes the church.
It's part of a project involving local schools - including St Mary's School.

The church is very interesting - both Wilberforce and Raffles were buried there.
The church also owns the pub next door which pays them rent. They used to have the parish meetings in the pub.

Thats fascinating,my son will be v.jealous.
Our Church just is!-but there's some nice gargoyles, angels & a rather explicit fertility symbol !!!Which for a quiet country town is rather amusing.
