Question Miriam -- you have Charles's marriage certificate -- what year did he marry?
This would have given us a benchmark for when he was definitely in Australia!

For Charles leaving for Australia, if he did stay in England until 1890, there are these 1890-1920:

Tip, Miriam -- when you come to Trying to Find, first thing you do: click on "My Threads" on the left side, and you'll see your thread (and any threads you've posted in) immediately, then just click on it. The site does the searching for you!
Good luck sorting those people out ... ;)

Good lord, talk about matching names.
In Witham Friary in 1841 we have:
Benjamin Edwards 2 Charles Edwards 25 Maria Edwards 25 Mary Edwards 5 William Edwards 1 Mo
and
Charles Edwards 30 Charles Edwards 2 Mo Elizabeth Edwards 5 George Edwards 7 John Edwards 2 Maria Edwards 25 Mary Edwards 8
It looks like I lighted on the wrong Maria and Mary in that 1881 household!

Charles Footser my eye.
I'm betting Charles Hooper ... well that was to good to be true. Looks like Foalser, and he's just a servant in the household.

Aargh. I never think to expand beyond England -- I use the England-specific censuses for each year, just keep the tabs open ... But with birthplaces in England, those households should have shown up.
How very weird that there's a Charles Edwards in that 1891 household -- when it looks like Mary Edwards Warren was with her mother Maria the census before.
Well, here they are in 1851:
Name: Maria Edwards Age: 36 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815 Relation: Wife Spouse's Name: Charles Gender: Female Where born: Witham Friary, Somerset, England Civil Parish: Witham Friary County/Island: Somerset Country: England Registration district: Frome Sub registration district: Nunney ED, institution, or vessel: 1b Household schedule number: 37
Benjn Edwards 11 Charles Edwards 37 Charles Edwards 1 Hannah Edwards 7 Maria Edwards 36 William Edwards 9
Lots of matching names. Where's Mary?

No Mary Warren or Edwards married a Hooper 1871-1881.
There is this birth in Devizes (where the household was in 1871):
Births Mar 1874 Warren Charles Devizes 5a 108
but in 1881 he seems to be the child of a George and Ann in Wiltshire.
Hmm.
Births Jun 1870 Hooper Charles Devizes 5a 93
But in 1871 he seems to be the son of Edward and Caroline in Wiltshire.
And by 1891 you believe them to be gone -- and FindMyPast only has outgoing passengers back to 1890 -- and I don't see Joseph in the 1891 census.
And I just don't see your Charles anywhere!
But that seems to settle who Joseph Warren and Mary Edwards were, so it's something, anyway.

Same household in 1871, now in Potterne, Wiltshire:
Name Age 7 6 Maria Edwards 50 (confirming this is the couple who married 1857) Alice Warren 7 Emily Warren 4 George Warren 11 Hannah Warren 5 John Warren 10 Joseph Warren 35 Marry Warren 33 William Warren 13
Two nameless children, hmm. Okay, on the image it actually says Twin Children, son and daughter, 7 days old. Which makes them two of these:
Births Jun 1871 WARREN Benjamin Edward Devizes 5a 95 Warren Levin George Devizes 5a 95 WARREN Lilly Ada Devizes 5a 95
There is another Joseph and Mary couple in Somerset with a son Charles born around 1866. No matching girls' names.
I'm suspecting something messy -- separation, new households -- and look what I find when I search for Mary by personal details alone w/o surname, in 1881:
Name: Mary Hooper [Mary Edwards] (added by Ancestry to match mother's name) Age: 48 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833 Relation: Daughter Mother's Name: Maria Gender: Female Where born: Witham, Somerset, England Civil Parish: Witham Friary County/Island: Somerset Country: England Condition as to marriage: Married Registration district: Frome Sub registration district: Nunney ED, institution, or vessel: 1
Maria Edwards 69 Mary Hooper 48
Interesting.

We start by going to FreeBMD!
http://www.freebmd.org.uk
click on the red "search" in the lower left and then search for
marriages warren joseph edwards mary
and one possible marriage turns up.
Marriages Jun 1857 Crees Seward Frome 5c 967 Crees Henrietta Charlotte Frome 5c 967 >> Edwards Mary Frome 5c 967 >> Warren Joseph Frome 5c 967 (in Somerset)
Only the certificate will confirm that they married each other, but for now the names and timeframe look good.
Turning to the 1881 census, we look for Charles Warren born c1872 with parents Joseph and Mary.
And there isn't one. Let's try for a sister in 1871. No luck.

The following is all the information I have. My grand father, Charles Warren, arrived in Australia about 1887, born abt 1872 in England. Charles parents (listed on his marriage cert.) were Joseph Warren and Mary Edwards (fathers profession: Farmer). Passed down to me by Charles' children is a story that Charles had 2 older sisters (Kate & Annie) and 2 or 3 brothers. His mother, Mary, imigrated to Canada, with the brothers about the same time as Charles came to Australia, leaving in England their father, Joseph, and the 2 girls. I have been unable to confirm any of these details and would love to find a connection somewhere ...please can anybody help? Miriam
