I am hoping that you can help me.

My Gr Grandmother was Kate Gibson Mountney abt 1868 , her mother was Hannah Mountney abt 1829. I am not sure if Hannah was married, I have sent for Kate's birthday certificate and it had no father on. I know she had brother and sisters. My Mountney came from sheepshed or now Shepshed. I know we have a link with the Loughborough Mountney, someone sent me a very Long family tree. My Grandma Kate Whitworth is on it, but I just can't link it all together.
Any help would be great or if you know someone who could please.

I have only been on Genes reunited since Jan,2012 but I have got the Birmingham Mountneys originating from Woodhouse Eaves, Leicestershire from around 1827 approx when John Mountney (my great great grandfather) then married Harriet Beardmore in around 1851.
Trying to find John's father has proved difficult as there were several Johns from the area at around the same time. I have a possibility with Ann Mountney who in the 1841 Census had five children (including John born 1826) and Joseph born 1835, but apparently no partner in 1841, even though her latest child Harry born in 1841. I am unable to discover if Mountney was Ann's birth name or married name.
Any info would be most welcome.

In the top right hand corner, on the same line as Find Ancestors, is a little box "Add Topic"

I'm putting John's message to me on here in the hope that we can have a go at sorting things out for him - hope you don't mind John :-D


A cousin from South Wales also thinks that the parents of John Mountney born around 1827 were Thomas Mountney and Sarah Preston but I cannot find any Sarah Preston through GR ! I have a Thomas Mountney born c.1798 who married a Sarah Parkinson and in the 1841 census they have 3 children William, Thomas and Charles born between 1826 and 1834 but no sign of a John born around 1825-1829 according to which records you read. I appreciate that I have only been researching for about 7 weeks and I may be a bit of a Dumbo as a newcomer butin the 1841 Census there is an Ann Mountney aged 45 with no partner in the household but she had children living there called John,Hannah,Joseph.Eliza, and a baby Harry less than a year old.....but no Daddy Mountney. Everything else seemed to fit until my cousin came up with a Sarah Preston and this threw me completely.
Another amazing link (or just strange coincidence) is that in the 1841 Census there is another entry where John Mountney aged 11 and William PRESTON aged 12 were listed as living in Loughborough with Thomas and Elizabeth Eddowes and an assortment of other people who appear to be unrelated. I find the presence of a young Mountney and a Preston of the same age totally odd given the link between Thomas mountney and Sarah Preston. I was inclined to believe that John Mountney was more likely to be connected to the Ann Mountney born in 1795/96 but now I'm puzzled. Would you think the Parish Records might help as I have not yet subscribed to these ? Thank you for your help.
