Don't take birth year on army records as gospel. Many men lied about their age to get into the army. My own father did.

Did it give an occupation for John's father on the marriage certificate in 1924?

yes farmer thats why we thought Wiltshire the best bet also he once told me he was born in salisbury but did not take that as gospel because nobody knew he had been married before he died except my mother in law
