I have today received the death cert for Charles Jefferies and the informant is shown as R C Jefferies (son) Charles died 1952 so I now know Ray/Roy was alive then. I have been told that the Kelly directory is the way to go as I have their address in 1938 and again on the death cert in 1952. Can anyone tell me if there is anywhere access to the Kellys directory for the County Borough of West Ham please?

Catherine I think my next move is to find marriages for Norahs sisters and then see if I can find a Ray/Roy with their surname. Can't remember now if I have already looked under Ray/Roy Lettington to see if he is her brothers child as getting totally confused. The writing on the postcard refers to the child in a way any normal father would so still think he was theirs but may be an adopted son. Perhaps he died young as my mother never mentioned him and I was born in 1944 and he looked as if he was about 7/8 in 1938 photo. Got the bit between my teeth now.

Yes this is him. His mothers name was Elizabeth though not Emily. The Rose shown was my Grandmother. Elizabeths maiden name was Gillespie which she gave to Charles as a middle name. I think there was a bit of a fall out within the family which is why I know so little of him. Pity there isn't a later census as I would love to know what he did for a living. I am pretty sure I now have birth/marriage/death info for him OK but still wish I could trace this Ray/Roy. Is there any way I could find out what Charles did in the war? Thanks every one for all the help you have given me.

Sorry had to sign off yesterday.

Just as a matter of interest (or not) I think this may be Charles in 1901, place of marriage being Woolwich it's a good possibility:-

Relation: Son
Father's Name: Fredk
Mother's Name: Emily
Gender: Male
Where born: Woolwich, Essex, England

County/Island: Essex
Country: England
Registration district: West Ham
Sub registration district: East Ham
ED, institution, or vessel: 71
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 210
Household Members:
Name Age
Charles Jefferies 7
Elizth Jefferies 4
Emily Jefferies 31-1870-born: Isle of Grain, Kent
Fredk Jefferies 39-1862-born: Brightlingsea, Essex

Frederick's profession is given as - Coal Porter

marriage certificate will confirm this or not as father's name is given.

Tahnks Shirley. I have just been through all the Jefferies born 1930 -1933 again and found nothing. He may well be adopted but I can't find marriage or death record for him either. Suppose he could be unmarried and still alive. If none of this works I guess I will have to give up as nobody in the family left to ask.

I did a full search on Ancestry a few weeks ago but found nothing for Ray/Roy/Raymond Jefferies. There was so many to look through I only hope I didn't miss it. Is there a way of searching just under the mothers maiden name as thats usually on the birth record isn't it.

theres no births coming up for Jefferies mmn Lettington from 1914. but Roy/Ray would mean a search of the full register for 1930,s

Catherine I will send for the marriage cert but was holding on in case I found Ray/Roy to get them all at the same time. Only thing that bothers me is the birth being reg as Nora and the marriage as Honora. From the photo I don't think she looks 25 years older than Charles so this must surely be a relative.

Cherry Report 5 Sep 2008 22:46

Thanks Catherine the 1893 one is probably her. Janice the 1869 one may be her parent so worth looking into. Thank you very much for your replies. Catherine I found the marriage one. Before that I didn't know her name even. They weren't talked about at home so can't be sure if this Ray/Roy is theirs or just a kid they took on holiday.

A big age difference is usually the other way round but I have seen it before that a man marries a woman 20 yrs older than him.
The marriage certificate will give her age.

I have a photographic postcard that shows my Geat Uncle Charles Gillespie Jefferies on holiday with his wife Honorah (known as Nora). Also on the photo is a young boy (he looks about 6/7) who he refers to as Ray or Roy. I am assuming this is his son. The postcard is dated 1938.Charles was born 16 Jan 1894 in Woolwich. He married Honorah A Lettington in Dec 1914. I think Charles died in 1952 as there is an entry for death in West Ham that looks to be him. I cannot find Honorah's birth or death or anything at all about Ray/Roy. Can anyone help please.
