So this is Sarah in 1871 - living with her aunt and uncle James and Janet Murray. What proof do you have that her mother was Janet's sister? The relationship given in the census should be to the head, which would make Marian James's siter:

I believe that Mary Ann is Marian as the kids match with the family she has, so it looks as it was a spelling mistake the person doing the census misheard what was said, plausible...

Mary Ann Hyslop was left in widowed in scotland and became a pauper so moved to Liverpool , she is later seen living with her daughter Sarah after her marriage to Thomas , her son Thomas is also with them....

Colin,

If you view the marriage record that Brenda found, it might have their parents' names.

Not sure if you know but there is an area in Liverpool called Scotland

Parish – Liverpool
Municipal Borough of Liverpool
Municipal Ward of Scotland
Parliamentary Borough of Liverpool
Ecclesiastical District of St Aidens

I have ancestors who put Scotland as place of birth on census but they didn't mean 'north of the boarder' Scotland. But the area of Liverpool called Scotland. Which is a real red herring - I spent ages looking in the wrong country?!?!
Thanks
