Lynn Report 11 Sep 2008 20:27

I have two birth certs for my 2xgreat grandfather and cannot decide which is the correct one. His name was Charles Wright (on his son's birth cert he has the middle name Frederick) and he was born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.
One cert is in 1852: address Church Walks, Bury, with mother Susannah(nee Lomax) and father Joseph Wright.(Also, Charles has the middle name John)
Other cert is in 1853 address 26, Church Walks, Bury, with mother Susannah but no father named.

So you see why I am confused! The two certs are VERY similar.Any experts out there that can give me some sort of an explanation please?

Births Dec 1852 (99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wright Charles John Bury St Edmunds 4a 406

Births Jun 1853 (98%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wright Charles Bury St Edmunds 4a 447

Are these the two births?

1861 there are two listed
One with mother called Susan and the other with Joseph and Susannah

On the 1861 census also in Church Walks:
no 17 - James H Wright
no 27 -Joseph and Susannah Wright
no31- John Lomax
no37- Henry Lomax

No Wrights living at no 26 which is on the 1853 cert.

Do you have his marriage cert? if so has he put down his father's name?

Lynn

Lynn Report 11 Sep 2008 20:43

Yes Glitter baby,
Those births are the correct ones.Susan and Susannah get mixed up sometimes but the certs are both Susannah.

Lynn

Lynn Report 11 Sep 2008 20:45

Yes Sam, the marriage cert says John Wright, deceased but I am wondering if that is to make it look good if Charles was illegitimate?

Many babies were registered with only one name, but then given a second name at baptism.

Is it possible to find baptisms for the two babies, and see what they say?

Never thought of that Sylvia, will look on the igi family search first but if not will have to find the family records for Suffolk.

Have you looked for deaths?

If one baby was born August 1852 and registered late, ie. in next quarter, it would be just about possible for the same Susannah to have another son the following June.

Lynn Report 11 Sep 2008 21:05

1852: Charles John born 20/11/1852 Registered 9/12/1852

1853: Charles born 13/5/1853 Registered 16/6/1853
Only 6 and a half months between them unless she had a premature baby second time around but it probably would not have survived in those days would it? Will check the deaths though, thanks Gwyn.

Both these children are on the 1861 census. On the 1851 Susan is living at no.26 and Joseph/Susannah at no.27. (Brother and sister perhaps)As Charles gives his father's name as John, I would guess that the mother was Susan. Although she appears to be unmarried, she had at least 6 children, so I would imagine the father was around. Probably called John, but probably not Wright.

Ah... The actual dates paint a different picture....

Thanks Christina,
I missed that info on the 1851 census. Sometimes you just need somone else to nudge you in the right direction ey. In that case I definitely need to see parish records as these might help clarify things. Or not as the case may be!

Cannot see any Charles Wright deaths in Bury for that time...

Have just found Susan, with an extra 3 children, on the 1841 census. This time she's living with John Wright - a painter. I don't know why the other censuses show her as unmarried. Was your Charles' father a painter?

Lynn

Lynn Report 11 Sep 2008 21:19

I have no idea if he was a painter Christina as the only reference to him I have is as deceased on Charles marriage cert. Sorry, just read that back to myself and it sounds rude...not intentional! Will have a look at that 1841 census thanks.

ChristinaS Report 11 Sep 2008 21:31

It's okay. It didn't sound rude to me. Susan on the 1871 census is calling herself a widow. So guess John had died by then. Married or not.

Christina,
Cannot find that 1841 census! Sorry can you add the details in this thread please. Pretty please. Lynn

Lynn, I'm afraid I can't "cut and paste" like most others on here. But, I used Ancestry, and put in Joseph Wright (I knew this was one of her sons from the 1851) b.1835 living in St.Mary, Suffolk. Hope this helps. Otherwise, I'm sure someone else will be able to cut and paste it for you.
