I would think it's just an error on the 1901 census and he should have been 54 not 64. That would match the one I found in 1861 who was 14, born Liverpool and was an apprentice upholsterer. |

Lisa, I just went back for a second look at those 2 censuses, 1891 and 1901 and William was 44 in 91 and 64 in 1901. |

Hi Lisa, yes it's normal for place of birth to change from census to census. It all depends who gave the info to the enumerator. Curious though that this one changed from Ireland to England. |

There are 2 William Wilkinsons born 1847, Liverpool on the 1861 census but one is an apprentice upholsterer so i presume that's him. He's 14, parents are Robert & Ann, Robert was a master tailor born Kendal, Westmorland. |

They're probably in Ireland for the 1881 census but should be in Liverpool for the 1871 census (that's where the earlier children were born) but I can't find them. |

I still think your best bet is to buy that marriage certificate to see if James' father was William. |

There are too many on the 1891 census to determine which one is him. I think you'll have to get his marriage certificate to find his father's name. |
