Not being rude at all, back to work and my wife nagging me on the new bathroom stuff. Dea, I had a couple of issues of possible one of two fathers for young Nat. I will dig them out and support my details, if I can.

You say you are tracing back from info on several certs - at what point is it that you become 'unsure' of the connecting link?

Hi Susan

I tracked his father also Nathaniel Hamlet born 1st February 1872. I am good with this detail as I have a few birth, marriage and death certificates. Father died in Liverpool in March 1932.

I think that his father is George Hamlet born about 1846, but there is conflicting details as to whether this is the right chap or not. I need to do more work on this and spend a few pounds to ratify my finding.

I do not want to go back too far until I can ascertain Nathan/Nathaniel Hamlet born c1898 details.

The family are Roman Catholic and as per my comments to Lost for Words, Hamlett was another spelling (mistake) which I have come across present day.

Once again thanks for the searching, I am storing all of the responses and details so as to help form a better picture and to take back to my family for their input. Perhaps as memory joggers?

Sounds like heavy stuff and perhaps unsavoury too as you say. It is a pity that my aunts or uncles from the same family can not add anything further.

One would have thought over the years as they got older too, that they would have asked their father about this even more. Sadly, I do not know when Nathaniel emigrated, if indeed it is the same chap as highlighted here by other helpful searchers.

Hi Jim

I've looked at the original image and all the others travelling with him are aged 10-16 and about 8 children on each ticket (mostly boys). Their were many children who went to Canada for a 'better life', often they were orphans but not always. I wonder if anything was reported in the local papers about them and why they went.

THE BRITISH CHILD EMIGRATION SCHEME TO CANADA (1870-1957)



100,000 British Home Children (alleged orphans) were sent to Canada by over 50 British Child Care organizations. These 4-15 year old children worked as indentured farm labourers and domestic servants until they were 18 years old. The British Child Care organizations professed a dominant motive of providing these children with a better life than they would have had in Britain, but they had other ignoble and pecuniary motives. They rid themselves of an unwanted segment of their society and profited when they sold these children to Canadian farmers. Siblings in care in Britain were separated from their families and each other. Siblings were separated from each other when they were sent to Canada. Most never saw each other again. Many spent their lives trying to identify their parents and find their siblings and most were unsuccessful. An unknown number of children ran away from their indentured labour in Canada to the United States. Millions of Americans may be descended from British Home Children. The 4-5 million Canadian/American descendants of the British Home Children have 20 million British Grandparents, Uncles, and Aunts. How could this many people not know they are related to one another? Their mutual searches have been hampered by the unwillingness of the childcare organizations to readily release vital personal information.

Hi Lost for Words

This one is intriguing as an alternative or mispelt Hamlet to Hamlett has occurred with the family name as recently as forty years ago.

My Nat/Nathan/Nathaniel's parents remained England until there death. So this lad would be on his own at fifteen years. Quite likely that it could be him of course.

Again, thanks for your help on this too. I looked up the reference, looks about right. Nathan/Nathaniel comes up a few times. My grandfather called his half brother Nat (according to my older relatives).

So could be Nathan or Nathaniel.

Pitty we can not get hold of the next Census records after 1901 yet. I am sure that this would help immensly.

I do not know which if any details are correct, other than what I have started this thread off with. Nathan/Nathaniel just vanished off the face of the earth as far as my older generation family were concerned, it was a long time ago of course.
