Shirley Report 26 Dec 2008 20:19

Hi, my name is Shirley (Graham) Bauder and I am looking to find any information on the Stuarts who immigrated to Canada from Scotland. My Grandfather was Edward Charles and I know one of his brothers also immigrated and lived in Manitoba, Canada. Any information would be greatly appreciated about our ancestors. My sister is also on this site searching for our relatives, Laurie (Graham) Budney.
Thankyou Shirley

Could this be a possible? Brandon is in Manitoba. If you have dates and names it would help a great deal.

For pob=Nuntly. This is crossed out on the original, and Gartly written in its stead. His dob=15/10/1890 on his attestation in 2/5/1916. There is also a medical review slip for 1917, so possibly he was injured - you'ld have to purchase his service record to know.

Based on his nok, this is him in 1891:
1891 Scotland Census
Registration Number: 198
Registration district: Gartly
Civil Parish: Gartly
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: Collithie - Cottage
ED: 1
Household schedule number: 26
Page: 5-6
Roll: CSSCT1891_63

George Stuart 52 Cullen, Banffsh Head Farm Overseer
Jane Stuart 44 Boharm, Banffsh Wife Farm Overseer Wife
Eliza F Stuart 17 Gartly, Aberdeensh Daur Scholar
Alexander Stuart 12 Gartly, Aberdeensh Son Scholar
Robert B Stuart 10 Gartly, Aberdeensh Son Scholar
Jane Stuart 8 Gartly, Aberdeensh Daur Scholar
Mary A Stuart 6 Gartly, Aberdeensh Daur Scholar
Edward C Stuart 2 Gartly, Aberdeensh Son

I didn't spot him in the 1911 census for MB - the 1916 census is available on film, but I don't know who has it - probably the LDS.

Maybe you could put the details in your thread that your sister put in hers about the same people?

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=923840

That would be better than us having to refer back and forth to that thread, even for anyone who picks up on what you said and does the search I did ...

Oh, what the heck, in the interests of coherency:

Have you searched for any of the children of George and Jean in the 1901, 1906 and 1911 Canadian censuses?

It's free to search, so there's no need for anyone to volunteer to do it for you!

Thanks for the PM Shirley (always best to reply in threads so everybody sees any info you can add - click on the purple "Reply" button at the top of the thread and a box will open).

You might want to clarify what you're looking for, now that it seems your sister, at least, has quite a lot of info about descendants in Canada.

Did you see the 1891 Scottish census info mgnv posted?

For the other brother who may have come to Canada, there seem to be two possibilities in the 1891 census:

Alexander Stuart dob c1879 (1878)
Robert B Stuart dob c1881 (1880)
- and per your sister, George Lyon 1891.

You could look for them in the 1911 Cdn census, say.

... Actually, Edward seems to have emigrated after that date; I don't see any of them in the 1911 census in Manitoba. The brothers were older, so one could have gone first.

Okay, here's the answer. Searching for the brothers at the site

Soldiers of the First World War - Canadian Expeditionary Forces
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

(I wish everybody would give source links so people can search for themselves!!)

we have:

Name: STUART, ALEXANDER
Regimental number(s): 153307
Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 9392 - 53
Date of Birth: 16/11/1878

On the original image, place of birth is Collithlie, Gartly, Aberdeenshire, occupation is stonemason, and next of kin is George Stuart, father.

Alexander enrolled on 15 June 1915.

The next stop when searching for a member of the Canadian military (there is a link from the search results page at the CEF site) is the Virtual War Memorial, which reproduces the Books of Remembrance showing all Canada's war dead.

http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collections/virtualmem

And unfortunately, we find Alexander there.

Winnipeg (Brookside) Cemetery contains 299 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 149 from the Second World War, most of them in the special military plot.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you do the search at that site, you will be linked to an image of the page itself. You can also order a copy of the page (which has gilt and ornate calligraphy) at no charge.

You do now have the name of Alexander's wife, from that record:
"Margaret Stuart, of 379, Rosedale Avenue, Winnipeg, Man."

You can have a look for Edward as well there.

Thankyou all for your input, I was able to see the Attestation Papers of my Grandfather. There is a lot of information that I already have here, but alot that I do not have. Yes my sister and I have the exact same information, we both just would like to find out more information that we do not have access to.
There father was George Stuart born 1838 and mother was Jane Calder born all in Scotland. We have the dates of birth of the children born to them. Would be nice to have a family contact to work together in a search.

From the CEF search screen, you can click on "Search Help"
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-130-e.html

This will tell you how you can order copies of service files. Given that both your guys seem to have been hospitalized, they're probably at the higher end of the page ranges - say about C$30-40. In Canada, one pays tax, but not the UK, but then postage to UK is higher. There's also a reduction of 25% for seniors (with proof of age 65+)

The above URL also has links to the unit war diaries, so you could search for "43rd battalion" say, (or its parent units the 9th brigade of the 3rd division) and see day by day what that unit was doing, and, moreover, what they were doing on the day your guy got wounded. There is an official history of the CEF. This is available, with maps, online at:
http://www.cefresearch.com/matrix/Nicholson/

My opinion is that the service files are well worth the money, especially split two ways.

Also in regards to Alexander 1804 (For the long period of 56 years he was in the service of the Earl of Seafield. He retired at the age of 78 on a well-earned pension, which he enjoyed till his death in 1892)

Liz,
Thankyou for that information.
The clarification on the date of death of Alexander and also the dates of the marriage.
What would really make my day is if someone else would come forward to say "Yes, this is my family tree as well". That would be nice.

Hello Ryan, this is a rather old thread and I doubt that Shirley is still looking for replies.

There are a few options for you to try:

You can click on her name and send your message that way - if she still has the same email address, she will be notified.

Try putting the names you are researching into the Search Trees box above to see if anyone else on this site has them in their tree. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner.

Finally, if you would like help with your research, why not start a thread of your own? Take a look at the Help Clinic - above left - for further advice and information.

Regards. Cx.
