Hi there, I'm trying to locate the names of any residents of 42 Angel St Newtown Sydney NSW in 1898. This is the address given for Victor Herbert Babilinski's mum, annie helena babilinski, when she registered his birth in 1898. What I'm hoping for is a William Woodrow at the same address, as he has always been touted as Victors father, but he's not on the birth cert and we have no other proof. Regards Linda :)

OK, have since discovered that william woodrow is living at 42 angel st newtown, with annie, which would seem to confirm that he is possibly Victors father. HOWEVER, (!!) he is living there as william jones, and after he and annies marriage, (using the name woodrow) he reverts to jones, and they move to Vic and both the boys take on the name Jones. So, why the name change. Can I access NSW newspapers to see if he committed a murder most foul? Or any other crime that would necessitate a name change? Or, is his real name Jones and he felt like going up market? HEEELLPPP!!

Hi hoping, the only thing I have found at the moment is the marriage of William to Annie in 1901, but you probably already have that.
will keep looking for anything else.

Hi Linda,
someone on here may have access to the Sands N.S.W Post Office directory for the year before and of Victors birth. for ( they include names and addresses.)

I live out of town in country Qld, and don't have access.

if you live in N.S.W...see if your nearest genealogical club has a directory
(ring up first )

kind regards, Lorraine

Hi Lorraine, thanks for the help. I do as you say have the marriage cert, and I've tried to check the sands directory on ancestry, but no joy. I don't believe this guy is the father, but it's sad that I won't be able to take it any further, (this is hubbys family). Hope you're not affected by the bad weather up there?Freezing here in tas!! Cheers Linda :)

Hi Narelle, thanks for that. I'm in Tas, so any help would be great!! I'm not convinced that this guy is the father (bio) and if they're not together in 1898, then I think we can pretty much say he's not. Thanks again, Linda :)

Hi there, there is a birth of a William Woodrow.
3439/1872 parents William and Mary.
at Glebe (not far from Newtown)

so he may have really been Woodrow ??
the plot thickens

kind regards, Lorraine

Thanks Lorraine, the bizarre thing is Annie had two sons. The first one in 1895, and at that time she registered the birth as iredale st, where there was a Harry WOODRUFF living at the same time. Another name change, or something more sinister?!! My father in law, since deceased was convinced this guy was the father, but couldn't work out why the name change. As wiliam married as woodrow, you would have to assume that is his legal name?? Curiouser and curiouser!! Linda :)

Sorry Linda Just reread your thread. The Sands problem is finished. If he committed murder he should be in gaol? Well I can tell you where he is not...
..........Index to Register of Criminal Depositions Received 1849-1921
....List of Gaol Photos
...........Records of Gaol Inmates (no dates)
............Divorce 1873-1903
............Insovence to 1887 ( a bit early for you but good to know)
all from State Records of NSW.
There must be a reason for changing his name????
good luck Narelle

Hi Narelle, did they have such a thing as witness protection then??!!! This is so confusing! Annie married a william woodrow, which you would assume is his real name, legal doc etc. But, she's living with a william jones, the name he uses before and after after they marry in 1901, and which she and her sons take on.

In 1895, when she has her first son, she appears to be living with a Harry Woodruff in Iredale St Newtown, which could be the transcribers error. for woodrow, but harry not william?? So, was he harry or william and was he woodrow or jones?? Regards Linda :)

Hello Linda, I don't know if this helps or hinders. Sands Dorectory on Ancestry for HARRY WOODRUFF
1893 33 Iredale st Newtown bootmaker
1894 same address no trade
1895 as above
1897 as above
1927 462 Glenmore Rd Edgecliff
1928 as above
1932 77 Goodhope St Paddington
1933 as above.
There were too many William Jones on the Sands Directory, you will need a second name
best wishes Narelle

Hi Narelle, thanks so much for that. He didn't go to Vic then, so the plot thickens! Wonder what if any, relation he was to William. And was he the first childs father. William was a tin worker, so different occupation.......Regards Linda :)
