yes i bought credits to search for the death of alan radford. I also looked for his marriage to my mum to confirm how alan was spelt, as i had a feeling it was allen.

I found on both his marriage and death it was spelt Alan, however the previous poster said allen radford mum was Duffin. Im thinking he was born Allen Radford but just started using Alan Radford.

Thanks i will try those sites tommorrow.

Ah, I didn't realize you were using this site.

The General Register Office is the source of the index where the registration details come from -- district, volume, page number, etc.

I'm not familiar with searching at this site; I use Ancestry. Ancestry uses the FreeBMD transcriptions, and for the periods not yet transcribed you can download the GRO index images and read through them for what you're after.

births
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8964

marriages
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8965

deaths
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8966

If you're buying credits here to find the info, I'd recommend instead that you take out a 14-day free trial subscription at Ancestry when you have a few hours to do the searching and downloading. That's all it would take, it's just that it's a bit much for a helpful stranger to take on.

If GR has those periods transcribed, though, it may be worth the price to be able to do the automated search.

FreeBMD does have images available free of charge:

http://images.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl

but only up to 1945 for births and 1935 for marriages.

Oh, and - you order certificates here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

There are a couple of other almost-matches -- Kathleen M Duffin birth and Kathleen May Radford death, May Duffin birth and May Radford death -- but the births and deaths don't match by a few months in both cases.

If Dorothy Duffin Radford is the right person, this is a sibling:

Births Jun 1927
Duffin Arthur L E Towle Nottingham 7b 537

I don't see a matching death post-1984.

There is an A Duffin telephone listing in Nottingham. That person is not on the electoral roll, but the post code corresponds to a household with two other Duffins aged 60-64.

There are only 16 Duffin listings in the telepone directory in the Nottingham area. You could always consider contacting them, as they would likely mostly be fairly close relations of Alan's mother. (There are dozens of Radfords in the directory, making that a much more daunting prospect.)

ok cheers, this may sound silly but what is GRO? and how would you attain death certificates etc. I got the vol and page numbers from here under the search for deaths/marriages etc but didnt have any other info on it.

Im new to all this and really dont know how to go about it. I just wondered if i had any grandparents or uncles/cousins alive from his side of the family.

Think i may have to look into a bit more tomm.

Thanx again evie.

A stroke of luck perhaps -- good and bad.

I'd wandered off in the middle of a search but went back to it.

There were only a few Duffin births in Nottingham 1920-1930, when we would expect Alan's parents to have been born.

I checked the post-1984 deaths for Radford and got an immediate match.

Births Jun 1925
Duffin Dorothy M Towle Nottingham 7b 668

Name: Dorothy May Radford
Birth Date: 10 May 1925
Death Registration Month/Year: Dec 2003
Age at death (estimated): 78
Registration district: Nottingham
Inferred County: Nottinghamshire
Register number: C90A
District and Subdistrict: 689/1C
Entry Number: 286

I would bet on those being the birth and death of Alan's mother.

Again, the death certificate might provide some information.

EvieBeavie Report 27 Jan 2009 01:59

Well, I hope the advice was useful.

Buy the death certificate you think is the right one; it could have a relation's name.

Buy his birth certificate, to get his parents' names.

Search for other Radford-Duffin births around the same time. Search for the marriages of any siblings you find, then for births of children of those marriages.

Collect as many names that way as you can, and look for the people in current directories.

Unless he had no siblings, you should be able to find cousins! Tedious slogging to identify them, but if they're there, that's what will do it. Good luck again!

sorry evie, it wasnt my intention to waste your time, and i really appreciate your help.

I cannot ask my mum, as it is a touchy subject. And i was only 8 when he died and i rarely saw him or any of his family at the time. so my memory of his side of the fmily is virtually none, i remember seeing his mum once as a toddler and i have some memory of an uncle but its unclear as i was prob only 4 at the time and is my nly 1 memory i have of his family.

I have looked on here and found their marriage on the records and the death of who i believe is Alan Radford (my paternal father).

Once again sorry if you think i wasted your time.

EvieBeavie Report 27 Jan 2009 01:34

Yes, well, you didn't make it clear! Mainly, the fact that Alan is your father and you are the Michael in question. So I kind of wasted quite a bit of time.

I suppose it's possible that you have absolutely no information about the people you're looking for -- you don't know whether he had siblings and what their names were ... but if you do, and you haven't offered it here, well, really, what are you expecting?? Looking for people whose names you know and you don't give them?!

Surely you have access to your parents' marriage info -- the certificate will tell you Alan's father's name, if you don't know his parents' names already.

If you know his mother's surname, or can find it by finding their marriage once you have his father's name, you can search the GRO index for births after the date of the marriage with the two surnames, to find siblings you may not know of. -- Oh, of course, Pam has provided his mother's surname: Duffin. And you have access to the untranscribed GRO? There ya go! And get his birth cert, and you will have the parents' full names, if you don't have them.

As I mentioned, the likelihood of a relation dropping by here approaches nil. But searches like that might find the names of relations you could then look for in directories.

thanks evie for all your help.

Maybe i havent made things clear, i know his wifes side of the family and his 3 sons me Michael being 1 of them.

What i dont know are any relatives from my fathers side (alan radford) due to a family split.

EvieBeavie Report 27 Jan 2009 00:20

Wife's name? She may have remarried -- if after 1984, could likely be identified in the 1984-2005 index at Ancestry. She might then be findable on the electoral roll at 192.com, or in the telephone directory on line.

Childrens' full names? An Anthony G Radford married in Nottingham in 1988. Well, no; your Anthony was too young then. ;)

No record for a marriage of a Sean Radford.

Numerous Michael Radfords, of course. A Michael S married in Nottingham in 1994.

An Anthony M married in Rugby in 2003.

There are four Sean Radfords on the electoral list 2008-2009, all aged at least 35. Aha. There is a Sean S in Nottinghamshire. Search at

http://www.192.com/search/search.cfm

- Sean Radford, specifying Notthinghamshire - and you can see the household composition over time.

Searched there for Anthony Radford as well. The 2008-2009 electoral roll listings in Nottinghamshire are for people who are too old.

The Michael S Radford for whom a telephone listing is given is also too old (search using the post code from the telephone listing and the matching electoral roll listing is returned).

Again, if you have middle initials (or can get them by finding the GRO entries for the birth) you might have luck finding them on the electoral roll. If you find a match, by name and age range, you can guess at locations by county, and if you guess right it will show you the county in the electoral roll result and provide any possible telephone listings in the county.

If he was born 1948 it's conceivable a parent might still be living, so you could search for those names as well if you know them.

Also try telephone listings directly:

Sorry nothing definite appears. Good luck!

It's wise to give all the info you have -- you probably know at least something: was he married? wife's name? Did he have children? names, birthdates? Do you know his parents' names?

It's unlikely that anyone who knew him will read your message, but helpful strangers can sometimes find information in records that will answer questions.

If you know his date of death, the record in the GRO index could be found and you could order the death certificate, which might name a family member. Ditto for his date of birth -- the record in the index would give his mother's birth surname. Both these could be found with some searching, but if you know the exact dates it would be much less time-consuming to locate the records.
