Find Ancestors

I have sent for a census report for 1911 for my grandmother and was surprised to see that she was born in Newcastle in 1902 when all the family thought she was born in Birkenhead. Is there any way to find a list of residents for that year.which may clear up why they were there.

It would be a very long list! Have you looked for the family on the 1901 census?

What is the name? If you find her birth certificate it will give the address where she was born.

Did any of the extended family live in Newcastle? I have found that young women having children often went to stay with a female relative (mother, aunt or sister) to have their baby.

Yes I've checked the 1901 and my great grandmother was in Birkenhead with one child.As soon as I found out from the 1911 census about Newcastle I've sent for my grandmother's birth certificate and am waiting for it. My grandmother was Winifred Palfreyman born 1902 and her mother was Margaret and her father John.He was at sea in 1881 and I couldn't find him in 1891 or 1901.I can't see any obvious connection with Newcastle.

Newcastle and Birkenhead are both ports and he was a seaman, so perhaps the family moved to be near his "home" port?

Further frustration---I've just had my money refunded by the GRO as they can find no trace of my grandmother's birth 1901-1903.

Is the place of birth in the 1911 just Newcastle? Or is it Newcastle on Tyne?

So, she could have been born 1900 or 1901

Just to confuse, the only Winifred Palfreyman birth for 1900/01:

Births Jun 1900 (>99%)
Palfreyman Winifred Swansea 11a 1029

That's the trouble--I know she was born 10/1/1902 but can only presume that she wasn't registered. Yes it was Newcastle upon Tyne.I suppose it doesn't really matter on the face of it but I'd love to know why she was born there as I went to school there!

That's curious because if someone's age was 10 on a census it means they've had their 10th birthday so they should show up on the previous census with an age in months.

Have you checked under her mothers maiden name ?or a marriage for her parents.?

You say you know she was born 10/1/1902.

How can you know for certain if you haven't found her birth certificate? If you are going by a date of birth on a death certificate then that can be wrong as it is only as accurate as the information the informant gives.

If you are going by word of mouth in the family - then this is also often wrong.

Without the birth certificate you can't be certain of her date of birth.

This is a strange family as my mum knows hardly anything about the Palfreymans but is anxious to fill in the gaps as she's writing her life story.In 1901 my grandmother doesn't appear on the census but her mother and sister do. Margaret -maiden name Healey aged 28 with Ethel aged 9 as lodgers in Birkenhead. I presume her husband John was away at sea as he was in 1881.As I've said in another thread Ethel is also a mystery.Winifred married Carl Clare in June1920 and is listed as 18.She died in Dec 1977 .

If this is her death, then even the person registering the death wasns't sure of the birth date:-

Winifred Clare, birthdate given as About 1903
Dec. qtr. 1977, Brentwood, 9, 1565

The only other death in 1977 for a Winifred Clare is this one with a middle name which you haven't mentioned before:-

Winifred Merrin Clare, birthdate given as 10th Jan. 1902
Dec. qtr. 1977, Birkenhead, 37, 0688

Yes Kath the second one is her and the reason I haven't mentioned the middle name is that even that is in question !!On her marriage cert its Marian but she signs Winifred M and on her death cert its Merrin.No one seems to know which was right.
