I am looking for information on Edmund Butterworth b Manchester 17 January 1841. He was a Methodist missionary and died in East Africa on 2 April 1864. It is thought that he had a brother William Edmund Butterworth b Manchester 1844 who later migrated to Australia. Edmund should be in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census returns but I have not been able to find any trace. I have no information on his parents.
There was an oak memorial tablet to Edmund Butterworth at the Cheetham Hill United Methodist Church, Leicester Road, Manchester unveiled in 1918 but I don't know if this building still exists.
Thanks, Brian

Thank you BoroGirl, Julie and Ann of Green Gables for you interest and help.
Concerning Edmund Butterworth, I have his date of death from his tombstone in Ribe, Kenya (2 April 1864, aged 23 years). His birth date of 17 January 1841 comes from a biographical article in a Methodist Church publication written in 1864: http://books.google.com/books?id=ywQFAAAAQAAJ&pg=RA3-PA519&dq=%22Edmund+Butterworth%22+++Africa&lr= This article give no mention of his parents or siblings.
Julie, your Edmund Butterworth found in the 1841 and 1851 census records sounds spot on. Except that Ann then found reference to two Edmund Butterworths also born in about 1841 in the 1881 census! This just confirms to me that there were many many Butterworths living in Lancashire at that time.
The LDS record for William (Edwin or Edmond) Butterworth b about 1844, Manchester who married Anne Barnes in 1869 in Penshurst, Victoria, Australia is correct. This person is my wife's great grandfather.
Is there any way of following the lead of the memorial tablet in the Cheetham Hill church? A copy of the unveiling ceremony document (1918) is held in the Manchester Archies in the Phythian Family collection. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=127-m270&cid=-1&Gsm=2008-06-18#-1 Programme for unveiling Memorial Tablet at Cheetham Hill United Methodist Sunday School M270/15/2/6 Late 20thC
This document mentions a Mrs Lewis of Oxford who was a sister of Edmund. I think that the Edmund Butterworth Lewis born in Cheetham Lancashire, mentioned by Ann, is just a coincidence sent to confuse us.!
I was hopeful that I could find some connection between Edmund and William Butterworth but it does not look as though this will be easy.

Julie: It seems from your 1841 and 1851 census information that Edmund was living (or staying) with his uncle and aunt William and Elizabeth Howe when the 1851 census was taken. If possible, could you please check the 1851 census for Joseph and Ann Butterworth (as identified in the 1841 census) as this may indicate that there were additional children born since 1841. Hopefully a William is amongst these!! Thanks, Brian
