Thats a good assumption Eileen, I'm working on the theory that Albert is the son of Elizabeth at the moment. She is the eldest of Mary and James children.
Plenty of avenues to explore now!
Thank you to everyone for your help!

Stephen Report 22 Feb 2009 15:52

Thanks Gwyn that solves that little one! :-)

The 2 census's are clearly the same family but there is such a differnce in Mary and James ages.
1901: Mary is 38, James 39
1911: Mary is 54, James is 63 ???

Just checked 1891 that puts Mary 29 and James 40 so does look like a clear age gap. Will go back further now!

Perhaps Albert /Peter did not know he was a grandson, the other children aren't that much older, only the census taker would have known the truth, and not the neighbours!!

Thank you Eileen,
I'm trying to figure out the grandson bit now!
The 1911 census shows Daniel Rout and Emma Rout as married aged 19 & 20, Albert being 7 on that census would put him surely too young to be the son of that couple.
And why would he later in life refer to his grandparents as parents... perhaps that is where the adopted bit looks good again? Even so the info you guys have helped me find looks certain to be the family, just a shame the year of birth is out by 4 years.
Gonna start to collate it all and try to decide how I can prove the links... I'd still like to find a birth reference for Albert Peter Route though :-(

Grandson? The plot thickens!
I'm going to download the original 1911 image and see if it might be a transcript error, the birth year that is!

Hey guys I reckon you might have cracked it for me!
Albert Peter Route has a brother called William! :-)

Gonna go have another look at what you have just posted, I think Terrington is in the right area to be registered in Wisbech.

Eileen Report 22 Feb 2009 14:58

In 1901 there is a James Rout in Gorefield St Paul Cambs a servant age 17 says born Terrington St Paul (that is the right area). Perhaps he was the father. Have you considered that they may not have been married, but that he took the father's surname later? Eileen

The 1911 and 1901 census detials are the same family In 1911 James Rout is listed as born in Terrington St Clement

Do you know if he had a lot of siblings? This one is father James with a brother Herbert, mother could still be having children 5 - 7 years later.

Agree the use of alternative spellings but I can't see him using this.

I wonder whether his mother could have married or remarried after his birth and he took his new fathers name or alternatively whether he was adopted. I suppose another option is to look the graves of his parents at Walpole St Peter

Stephen Report 22 Feb 2009 14:03

Yes I have tried some different varients and have combed through the GRO records for the time he was born but no luck.

Stephen

Stephen Report 22 Feb 2009 13:21

I am hitting a brick wall with the family of my great grandfather ALBERT PETER ROUTE.

I have plenty on him, including his war records that I have just recieved, these give his date of birth as 4 March 1908 at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. I can not however find an entry in the Birth Index's. The next of kin shown on the war records are that of his mother "Mary" and it looks like the address is Aldershot. On the same line as this is what looks like a reference number 2/191/34. Possibly also serving in the forces?
I have checked the Army GRO records and again there is no trace.

His Marriage Certificate gives some more info:
Albert Peter Route to Alice Amy Warren on 26 Aug 1933 at Foulden, Norfolk. Aged 26 (giving birth about 1907).
Fathers name JAMES ROUTE. One of the witnesses is a HERBERT ROUTE.

My nan (his daughter) told me that he went by his middle name of Peter and this is confirmed on his army records and his death record. He died in London during an air raid when my nan was just an infant.

Death index, Peter A Route in 1940 Q4 Westminster aged 32. (again giving birth 1908)

CWGC gives Peter Albert Route death 16 Nov 1940 but no age or other details.

Newspaper cutting given to me by my nan says he died during an air raid in London aged 37. (Putting his birth at 1903!!!) Also says he was from Walpole Saint Peter, Norfolk, son of the late Mr and Mrs Route who were well known in the Walpole district. Buried in Foulden, the home of his wife and two children.

Can anyone suggest my next move?
I am going to try and order the birth cert using the place and date of birth.

I have found only one James Route (1873 Norfolk) but I cant confirm he is the father.
I can only see one Mary Route on the 1911 census but she is too young to be the mother.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Kind regards
Steve
