1911 success

Just wanted to share a success with you. I looked up my grandmother on the 1911 census thinking she was an only child only to find that her parents had had two other live births but these children had died before the census. With a little help from the Birmigham Registry Office Genealogist I have today received two certifices for the births. All I need to find now is the marriage of their parents which is proving very difficult. Just wanted to share my success with someone.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Dea

Thanks for the offer but the great people of GR have tried before without success. There is just no marriage for a George Sedgwick to Amy Elsmore. George born 1861 was discharged from the Army in 1891 and stated on his discharge papers he was unmarried. Amy was born in 1870 in Birmingham. Their first child was born in 1893 and stated on the certificate mother Amy, maiden name Elsmore. On 1901 and 1911 census it states they are married. I just think they were unmarried. I can't find a birth for Amy Elsmore either.

Thanks

Pam

Hi Mel

It is possible. She could have married very young. Is Amelia another version of Amy?

Hi Mel

I looked at that one too but 2 things discounted it

There is no birth for an Amelia Ann Elsmore
also Beatrice Sedgwick was born by then

On the 1901 and 1911 census it states that she was born in Birmingham but the Birmingham Register Office couldn't find a birth either. George has a sister called Amy Sedgwick born the same year as Amy Elsmore in Birmingham and for some time I wondered if his sister was the mother of Beatrice by someone unknown and that her brother George took her in and they brought up Beatrice together and prentened to be husband and wife for the sake of the child. But when the 1911 census came out and I found there were two other children born to them (I now have the certificates for both these children) I'm having to rethink the situation.

Pam

It looks as if perhaps George and his sister Amy's mother's maiden name could have been Elsmore

Yes, that is another complication. George's parents were George Sedgwick and Elizabeth (betsey) Elsmore. Thats the problem I have had.

Pamela

Pamela Report 7 Mar 2009 18:30

The other children born to George and Amy were called George, both died. The first George was born in 1893 and lived for a year, then came beatrice (my grandmother) then another George born in 1903 and dying in 1910.

George was serving in the Army and on the 1891 census was guarding the Tower of London, he was later discharged from the Army in June 1891.

I have all George's family. It's just Amy's side I can't find.

Hi Pam,

Sorry - had to go and do one of those 'two-minute jobs' - renewing my anti-virus system (with upgrade) - just a 'quick' download'

It has taken me about 3 hours to sort it !!!!!!!!!

I can't face starting on this now as I am feeling a bit brain-dead but I will take a look tomorrow.

I have a feeling I have worked on this also in the past so may have some notes on it.

Will look tomorrow and let you know if I can find anything.

On 1911 census does it say how many years married?
Do you have their death details?
