Sorry I led yiou astray but it did look a good possible.Maybe they were not legally married but Sarah took Georges name for the sake of the children. He may have had a living wife and divorce was rare in those days

Have just received the marriage cetrificate .... but unfortunately it's not for my George Gough....

George Gough Minor Bachelor Coalporter 4 Little Efsar St
Father David Gough Coalporter

Elizabeth Esther Coalgate minor spinster same place
Father William Coalgate Coalporter

I did'nt see anywhere on the order form for adding a Brides name, so just took a chance.. never mind .... at least it rules one out.

Thanks very much Gillian, all new info for me, do you have a ref no. for the marriage? i will definitely send for it and let you know the outcome

GillianMac Report 20 Mar 2009 16:32

Given that the births of at least the first 3 children were regaistered in Strand
George david Gough 1847 Sep Q Strand
John Collins Gough 1850 Mar Q Strand
Henry Gough 1851 Sep Q Strand

I thought I would look at marriages there and there is a marriage for George Gough 1845 Dec Q Strand which would fit date wise- one of the brides has been transcribed as Joana Goggin, but a look at the Index shows no Goggin for that quarter in Strand -so it is possible that mistranscription has taken place. It might be worth sending for the cert and I think you can ask if the wife is Sarah and if not do not have to pay the full £7

There is always the possibility they were not married at all -what is the exact wording on the birth cert from which you obtained her name ?
I would hazard a guess that the "solicitor" entry for the 14 yearold Richard (which did seem to me to be suspect) was a mistranscription for "soldier"

Thanks for all that Gillian... don't know if they where seperated.... has been a tough family to track, my line comes from son William, who was in the Navy then a Coastgaurd, he married a Annie Slight but had been married before... but i have not found his first wife yet.
Son Richard who on one of the census is down as a solicitor was definitely in the Army (Kent Buffs) and fought in the Zulu War (i have his Medal) I have no information on the other siblings... i would have though that at least one would have followed the Fathers profession.
Was hoping to find a reference for George & Sarahs Marriage and send for the certificate, wonder if they both came from Witney and Married there.
Thanks Again

And in 1901 Sarah 74, wid, b Witney Oxon, is living with daughter Frances M , 24 ,b Kentish Town, dressmaker in St Pancras, so it looks like the right Sarah

GillianMac Report 18 Mar 2009 13:32

A look at the actual image for 1861 shows that Sarah is certainly shown as born Oxfordshire, but the children have question marks against them except for william who is shown as b London, ther are no ditto marks between them
There is a Sarah Gough 43 b Witney Oxfordshire, living 5 Leverton St St Pancras, in 1871 occupation Nurse with son John 21 Carpenter and joiner b Strand Middx -BUT she shows herself as Widowed as does George in the separate entry for him -were they separated not widowed?

Got Sarahs maiden name from Richard Gough's birth certificate.
Yes the Goff family in the 1861 are the same family.
Have not got the info on Sarah and first 4 children coming from Oxfordshire... have you any more on this ?
ManyThanks

Given the coincidence of George Seniors occupation might this be George Junior in 1851 -he is aged 3 and classed as a pupil in Camberwell in the home of Elizabeth White who is a Governess and Widow of a Law Stationer? His birthplace is shown as St Clements Middx

If you know the names of the children could you list them? It might make it easier to spot them on the censuses.
