Roy Report 24 Mar 2009 20:22

I would like to find out if two of my aunts were married. They are Mary Ann Edwards b abt 1873 and Ellen E Edwards b abt 1875. Both born in Addlestone, Surrey. Their parents were James Henry Edwards b 1847 in Ewell, Surrey and Mary Ann Overton b 1847 in Addlestone, Surrey. Any help will be much appreciated.

Roy.... There are literally hundreds of Mary ann Edwards.......Have you got either of these 2 Aunts on any census? if so it will narrow down a time frame for searching, but the only way you get parents details {fathers] is from a marriage cert. or Parish record of the marriage, and though they were born in surrey ,this is no proof that they married there.

Please put up any details you have that show when they were still spinsters.

Nickydownsouth and Jean, Sorry I couldn't respond yesterday, having computer problems.
I do not have much detail to give. There was another son, George Thomas b 1882 who was my father, but when he was alive I never knew he had any siblings. Both his parents died in 1889/91 so I presume, being only 9, he must have gone into an orphanage, but have no knowledge of this.
As you will gather I know so little of my family so I do not know if any of them emigrated.
I do apologise, but being new to this, I did not appreciate exactly what was involved.
Thanks for your help and understanding.
Regards Roy

Roy, so working on the theory that your grand parents were in Lambeth in 1881, I presume that this is your fathers birth registeration, Do you already have his birth cert.? if not you can order it from the GRO for £7.00, this will help you trace your family back further, and confirm parents names which you can match with the 1881 census entry to be sure you have the correct person.

Roy Report 27 Mar 2009 20:27

At last, back at the computer for a short time.
Yes I do have my fathers birth certificate and the registration was 1d 353.
He did serve in the army. I don't know when he joined, possible under age, particularly If he had been in an orphanage or home.
From what you have discovered, it appears to be him at Hilsea Barracks in 1901. Perhaps I can find out something about those barracks.I have seen some information about his regiment (2nd Battallion Rifle Brigade). They returned from India in 1914 and then went to France. He married in 1918 to Florence Emily Browning in Wanstead, Essex.
I have some details of mothers siblings, but nothing of my fathers, hence my interest in the two aunts.
I presume to confirm the marriage found by Rose, I would need to obtain a copy of the marriage cert to establish Ellen's parents are correct. I see in the details it says Ellen was born in Chertsey, but in the 1881 record it says born in Addlestone?
Thanks again for your help.

Nickydownsouth Report 27 Mar 2009 21:02

Roy.... Addlestone is a village very close to Chertsey.......Chertsey is simply the registeration district for that area, if you want to order her birth cert, and want to make sure it is the correct one you can stipulate parents names, that way if it is not the correct one, you will only be charged £3 or £4, instead of the whole £7.00.

You could stipulate fathers name for the marriage cert. as well, and then the same pricing policy will apply.

Roy,

What are the details of the marriage cert - witnesses, age, father and father's occupation?

Did you order the birth cert. based on this info?

Rose

Roy

Roy Report 28 Mar 2009 09:37

Thanks for explanation re Chertsey/Addlestone.

The details on the marriage cert which is dated 29th June 1918 are: witnesses- Ellen Alexander and Martha Archer my father age 35, Soldier, his father is given also as 'George Thomas Edwards' deceased.
This error in Gfather's name mislead us initially especially as father's cert of registry of birth was very basic and gave no details of parents.
My brother obtained a copy of the birth registry entry which gives the fathers name as James Henry, Signal Fitter, and mother Mary Ann Overton.
They were living at 10 Barnes Terrace, Lambeth. This was 20th Nov 1882.

Roy Report 30 Mar 2009 22:55

Nicky........we have managed to obtain father's medal records but no details of his army service. I understand a lot of those records were destroyed during WW11. What we are short of now is what happened to father, and the other children after both parents had died. I must try to find out more about the Hilsea Barracks in 1901
I shall try to get certificates of the two sisters possible marriages, to hopefully fill in the gaps there. Thanks for the tip about costs of certs.
Also a visit to the National Archives would no doubt be helpful.
.
Many thanks for all your searching on my behalf.
