I am looking for Isabella Flaherty late Austin formally Ellis b1844 Shelton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.
Isabella bigamously married Henry Flaherty, occup solder, in January 1871 in Dover, Kent.
In the 1871 census Isabella is lodging in Dover together with her daughter Sarah Ann Austin b1861 Shelton, Staffs (my2x gt grandmother). No sign of Henry.
Isabella is missing from any other further census. Having searched for a few years now I did think maybe that with Flaherty being an Irish name Isabella and Henry may have gone over to Ireland. However I have just received an 1887 death cert on which Isabella is the informant...this was in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Linda

Just to be sure -- on the 1887 death certificate, she uses the name Isabella Flaherty?
Whose death was it - name and relationship to her?

The death cert is for a child of my 2x gt grandparents....it states I Flaherty grandmother present at death.
The Newcastle address given is different from the address of my 2x gt grandparents.

The 1871 is a bit ambiguous - the transcript gives Sarah as George & Elizabeth's daughter, but she is listed after Isabella (Lodger) and noted as daughter. If she was George & Elizabeth's daughter she would be listed above the lodgers, with the family's sons.
Possibly the reason Isabella can't be found on the census is that she was abroad with her soldier "husband".
Did she have any other children?

The odd time when Ancestry does decide to follow the rules -- relationship recorded is supposed to be relationship to head of household -- it's the wrong time.
Still trying to sort it out -- the child whose death she reported was her grandchild -- daughter of Sarah Ann Austin? That is, there isn't another known child?

Many thanks Potty...
Sadly I don't know if Isabella had any more children.
I have also been unable to find Sarah Ann in the 1881 census so that hasn't helped either! I have found Sarah Ann in the 1891/1901/1911 census. My 2x gt grandmother Sarah Ann emigrated to Alberta, Canada in 1918.

So sorry the phone rang...
Yes Catherine that is the family for ref.
EvieBeavie...it was Sarah Ann's son....sorry should have explained better.
Sarah Ann married my 2x gt grandfather John Stockton Williams in 1888 in Newcastle. They had 9 known children...the first 4 children were born illegitimate. John died in 1896.
Isabella is just a mystery though.
Thank you all

"Sarah Ann married my 2x gt grandfather John Stockton Williams in 1888 in Newcastle. They had 9 known children...the first 4 children were born illegitimate. John died in 1896."
Finally! You had sidestepped actually naming any of them up til now. ;)
It's just that these things *can* help - if people were in the same place at one point in time (the child's death), they might have been at another point, so having info that might help find any one of them can help!

1891
Name: Sarah A Williams Age: 30 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861 Relation: Wife Spouse's Name: John S Gender: Female Where born: Hanley, Staffordshire, England Civil Parish: Newcastle Under Lyme
John S Williams 38 Sarah A Williams 30 John S Williams 8 Isabella S Williams 6 Albert Williams 5 Hannah S Williams 2 William Williams 3/12
So Sarah Ann's birthplace is constant 1871/1891 - that's one thing I'd wanted.
I think I'm in the "in Ireland" camp. Or somewhere else -- if Flaherty was in the military, they could have been in Canada even!

I know ... what to leave in, what to leave out ...
I did a search at Fibis just for the heck of it. The only record for a Henry Flaherty is:
Military records > Medal rolls : The Indian Mutiny Medal Roll (British Forces) 1857-1859. Given Names(s) Henry Surname Flaherty Rank Sergeant Regiment or Ship 1st Battalion 13th Foot (Prince Albert's Light Infantry)
I don't suppose you even know about when yours was born (unless the mrge cert says something?).

Just thinking - Flaherty is an Irish name, but we don't know that Henry was from Ireland.
There are Flahertys in Staffordshire throughout the censuses (including misspelled as Flarty, etc.).
Have you looked for Henry before/after the marriage? Stupid question, I'm sure.
Does the marriage certificate give his age / father's name?
It just makes more sense that Isabella would have relocated to Dover with him, rather than move there and meet him there.

EvieBeavie...
I have tried looking for Henry in the past...
The marriage cert gives his age as 30 so c1840 and his father's name was Patt Flaherty.
You have given me something to think about...I will see if I can find a possible family in Staffordshire.

Please may I have a RANT...
On the 1870 Dover marriage cert of Isabella it gives Henry's address as Western Heights, Dover....I have now found Western Heights were army barracks. I have been through every blessed 1871 census image for WH and no sign of Henry.
On the 1887 death cert Isabella was living at 11 Holborn, Newcastle under Lyme. On the off chance... I have looked through 16 Newcastle enumeration districts for 11 Holborn only to find she did not live there in 1891...ARGHHHH.
Many thanks RANT over lol.
