So Georges sister married a Peter Hvistendahl. But why on Earth he chose his brother in Laws surname as a middle name for two of his children remains a complete mystery!

Greenwell Hudson married Mary Caffray in 1860, Sunderland

Just done a bit more googling and Hvistendahl is a Norwegian name. So you were right about the connection. So could Karl O Knap be a relative of either George or Mary?

You could be right about the Scandinavian connection but I can't fine one apart from the fact that Karl O Knap on the 1871 lodging with them is a Norwegian.
My guess was Indian because it sounds Indian to me.
Was George in the Army based in India at some point perhaps.
I can find their daughter Mary Maria in 1871 but I can't locate them Was she a Caffrey before she married as Mary Maria is with some Caffrey's but the Grandparents are called Hudson. It's a bit of a puzzle.

Thank you so much Astra -yes this is my family. Now there's even more mystery about the Hvistendahl and possible Indian connections! I'd always assumed some sort of Scandinavian link
