Can anyone please advise. I have been googling but cant find the answer

In 1924 when a child was registered did the father have to be present or could the mum "make up a name"?

I am helping a friend and she has her fathers birth cert with mum and dad's name on but we can't locate a marriage for them

Thanks in advance

If the party registering the birth gave the info as if they were married then no proof of marrige would be asked for . People did tell porkies to cover facts. for instance my paternal gran was married twice and had two children before she married the second husband ,He registered both births as if they were married but they didnt marry till the second child was about 13 months old. So your couple may have been living together but not married at the time .

Its always possible that mum may have been married before so altho you have a birth cert with mmn on it The marriage may have been in another surname for her. Don't forget there were many WW1 widows who remarried.

Right here goes

Lillian Frances Scrase born Sep 1894 Cardiff
She married William Parkhouse in 1914 in Monmouthshire
William died 1921

Now we have the birth cert for Arthur J Scrase (my friends dad)born Dec 1923 @ Cardiff , mothers maiden name Parkhouse (can not find a marriage for her back to a Scrase) Father is noted as William Henry Scrase

She then married Frederick William Pero in 1934

And then she married Samuel A Scrase in 1949

We have looked at this on and off over the year and then get in a right pickle!! lol

EDIT

When she married William Pero her last name was Parkhouse
When she married Samuel Scrase her last name was Pero

I am beginning to think that they were unmarried

Do you know for a fact that Lilian Frances SCRASE was his mother and that she was born in Cardiff at that time?
Shouldn't we be looking for someone born named PARKHOUSE ?

EDIT
Do you know of any siblings of Arthur?

These are the details from Arthur's birth cert

29th sept 1923
17 george street, Arthur John Scrase,
Father William Henry Scrase, Mother Lillian Frances Scrase formerly Parkhouse
Father was a commision agent of 11 george street barry,

These are the details she has given me

I think you need to check for yourself that the word 'formerly' was on the certificate. Even if it was they could just have pretended to be married.

You said William Scrase died in 1921 but Arthur was not born until 1923?

edit - sorry I'm getting confused with surnames!

Marcelle

Marcelle Report 17 May 2009 16:13

William Parkhouse died in 1921, not William Scrase

This is the email I had from the lady who believes we have a connection

29th sept 1923 17 george street arthur john boy, william henry scrase, lillian frances scrase formerly parkhouse commision agent of 11 george street barry

ME:
re reading it, it appears that Arthur was born at 17 George Street and dad lived at 11 George Street so maybe they weren't married. She has all the info on Lilians previous and after marriages just stuck on her dads birth. Was always told her dad 's dad was not on cert until I told her to get it to double check and it stated William Henry Scrase.

Ricochet

The Parkhouse kids are from Lilian Scrase & William Parkhouse marrige.
It appears Lilian married a few times

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 17 May 2009 16:19

Is all this information backed by certificates?

Maiden name should not change for any child's birth, of any marriage, no matter how many times the mother married.

Have you come across this before where the dad lives at a different address?
