If the party registering the birth gave the info as if they were married then no proof of marrige would be asked for . People did tell porkies to cover facts. for instance my paternal gran was married twice and had two children before she married the second husband ,He registered both births as if they were married but they didnt marry till the second child was about 13 months old. So your couple may have been living together but not married at the time . |

Its always possible that mum may have been married before so altho you have a birth cert with mmn on it The marriage may have been in another surname for her. Don't forget there were many WW1 widows who remarried. |

I think you need to check for yourself that the word 'formerly' was on the certificate. Even if it was they could just have pretended to be married. |
