i have traced my family back to the 1871 census and cant seem to get any further.
i have got john petty (1838) married to hannah (surname?) and kids mary, jane, hannah, james, wills

Carla, I found most of the information on the Ancestry site and FreeBMD site.

If that is your John Pretty as a 'son-in-law' (probably stepson), then I think he is the son of Mary's first marriage. You will see Ricochet has shown a marriage between William Bristow (mis transcribed on the census as Briston) and Mary Petty.

but the dates do not add up for all the info to be right?
in the 1841 census (i think it was) john was 4 and mary 47 - meaning a 13 yr age gap
but for the marriage to william bristow there is a 10 year age gap between mother and son?
can these two still be linked?
