Thanks for your input I will certainly take it on board. I have however found a John Young b1870 Somerset, occupation Coachman in the 1861/71 census living in Foots Cray, Kent. His spouse is Rachael b1817 and he has a step daughter Ann Watkins b 1847. I'm now trying to find there marriage. Perhaps Elizabeth died so I am also looking for her death.
I would be most grateful for any help.

Regards
Carolyn

I agree. It depends on how the question was asked about William's father. If he was just asked "what is your father's name?" he may have just said "John" without saying that his father was deceased.

Lots of people will tell you they have marriage certificates where the father is not noted as deceased when they know for certain that he was dead because they have the death certificate.

If it were my family I would certainly think this was the right family.

If John was deceased at the time of William's marriage it would not have to be noted on the marriage certificate. William was not legally bound to give his father's name, let alone whether he was alive or not.

I have the m/c for John's son William who married in 1848, it does not show John as being deceased so the marriage of Elizabeth Young and Joseph Bishop is probably not the one I am looking for after all.

Just looked at that for myself and I agree its definately a possibility. Think I'll have to invest in that marriage cert but before I do I think I'll look to see if a death was registered for John Young.

If you bought the marriage certificate that Sliwowski found for Elizabeth Young and Joseph Bishop it should say whether or not she was a widow at the time of the marriage.

I have a feeling that Elizabeth was the one who gave the information to the enumerator on the 1841 census because it actually has Joseph down as Young which is then crossed out and Bishop written instead. She probably got mixed up and forgot her new name for a second.

It looks like a distinct possibility this is your Elizabeth.

In 1851 Joseph and Elizabeth are in Midsomer Norton with son, James 11yr old and George may well be in the Marines.

I'll leave the rest for you to investigate!!!

There's a George Young 10 yr old in 1841 in St James District of Bath with Parents Joseph and Elizabeth Bishop. Could John have died and Elizabeth remarried??

Carolyn

Carolyn Report 24 Jun 2009 12:32

Thanks Kath, I'll look into that. Strange thing is that I can't find either Elizabeth or John on any of the census, any ideas?

Looks like William married in Bath so it may just be a case of scouring the 1841 Census to see if they were together

More than likely but it hasn't helped me find Elizabeth or her family from 1831 onwards. I can't even find her birth so I am presuming that she was born in Somerset as that's where she married an her children were born.

Pretty sure the name Bong is mistranscribed from the abbreviation for Benjamin.
