Caroline Spooner abt.1806 & son James Spooner 1845

SORTED FOR NOW. THANKS !!!
In 1881 Caroline Spooner was living in Hackney at De Beauvoir Town with her son James Spooner, his wife Harriet nee Kempston and their two children, Caroline and Horace James.
The 1881 census states that Caroline had been born about 1806 in DISS in NORFOLK. Son James had been born in about 1845, also in DISS.
The name James, in two generations, suggests that Caroline's husband might also have been a James but I have been unable to corroborate this as I can find no census record, prior to 1881, that includes a Caroline Spooner, with a son James both born in Diss in Norfolk; let alone a Caroline, a son James AND a husband James.
Not sure how to scale this brick wall?
Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I live in Spain so trips to Norfolk/Suffolk Records Offices are not really an option.

I found a marriage between a James Spooner and a Caroline Raison ... 30/06/1833 Boxford Suffolk England.

GlitterBaby Report 17 Jul 2009 23:35

1841 might match with the 1833 marriage

Name: Caroline Spooner
Age: 25
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1816
Gender: Female
Where born: Suffolk, England

Civil parish: Lavenham
Hundred: Babergh
County/Island: Suffolk
Country: England

Street Address:

Occupation: View image

Registration district: Cosford
Sub-registration district: Lavenham
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
James Spooner 35
Caroline Spooner 25
Walter Spooner 5
Elizabeth Spooner 2

But might be a wild goose chase as listed as born in county

My problem with the Boxford marriage record was that it seemed to lead on to the 1861 census, where I found a James Spooner, with a wife Caroline but it stated that they were BOTH born in Boxford. I don't know if Boxford is anywhere near Diss??? ... Also disconcerting, ... there was a 13 year old son Daniel but no sign of James. There is nothing at all for 1851 that would fit!!! I would be happier about this couple if I could find them with a son James.

Hi Glitter Baby
Yes I had looked at the one with Elizabeth and Walter. I was drawn to it because Walter was my father's middle name, also his uncle's. But it might just be a coincidence? Also Caroline was born a bit late.

I have also found a burial record for a James Spooner 11/11/1868 age 64 at Palgrave St. Peter Suffolk. I might send for this certificate? Does anyone know where Palgrave is in relation to Diss, Boxford, Lavenham etc? My knowledge of East Anglia is pathetic!!!

You are doing well Glitter Baby.
I wondered if the above James was married to Lucy and Emily was their daughter? The census doesn't tell us how they were related to each other, just that they were visitors in that household. ... 'My James' was certainly married to a Harriet later, but he could have been married to a Lucy and she may have died?? If I send for a marriage cert for James and Harriet, I will find out if he was a widower. I'll put it on my list 'to do if no other evidence turns up' These certs all get so expensive though!

1851 too many things match on this

Name: James Spooner
Age: 41
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1810
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Charlotte
Gender: Male
Where born: Boxford, Suffolk, England

Civil parish: Diss
Ecclesiastical parish: Norwich
Town: Diss
County/Island: Norfolk
Country: England

Street Address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Disability: View image

Registration district: Depwade
Sub-registration district: Harleston
ED, institution, or vessel: 7e
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 96
Household Members: Name Age
James Spooner 41
Charlotte Spooner 39
William Spooner 14
Ellen Spooner 11
James Spooner 7
David Spooner 3

But Charlotte born Suffolk
Could David be Daniel

Too many guesses I suppose

No idea what the occupation for James is !!

Carole

Carole Report 18 Jul 2009 00:16

Do you know Glitter Baby, it might seem mad but, I quite warm to this one?
Charlotte-Caroline ... C-C
Walter-William ... W-W
Elizabeth-Ellen ... E-E
James-James
David-Daniel ... D-D
Plus correct order for the children.
Plus the ages are not too bad.

I have had far more bizarre name variations in other parts of my tree! One lot changed their surname FOUR times over successive censuses and not just the spelling, the whole name. They went from Murdoch to Pettigrew to Carr and finally back to Murdoch Fortunately they had twin girls and this remained constant, plus ages and places of birth. So nothing amazes me anymore!!
The above must also be the Depwade James, referred to earlier with a suggestion that I should send for his birth cert?
I couldn't read the father's occupation either!!

Thanks for your help so far. Definite food for thought.

I have found a bit more information; interesting, but it doesn't, answer my question!!
Caroline and Daniel also appear in the 1871 census.
She is a 65 year old widow, this time born Newton SUFFOLK??? .. in the Civil Parish of Diss (Is Diss in Norfolk or Suffolk?? I'm confused!! )
She is living with unemployed son, Daniel, age 23, a groom, born Diss, Norfolk (I am assuming it is on the boundary between Norfolk and Suffolk??).
The widow bit ties in quite well with the death of a James Spooner in 1866 that I found in a Parish Record collection.

I have gone on to find a Daniel Spooner in the 1881 census ... He is married to an Amy, has three children, works as a groom and was born in Diss.
BUT, .....
I'm not really interested in Daniel and this doesn't get me any further forward in establishing a Caroline; son JAMES and husband, hopefully also James link.

Carole

Carole Report 18 Jul 2009 10:21

I hope anyone looking at this has a better knowledge of East Anglia than I do???
The possible 'sightings' for Caroline have her born in
1)Diss, Norfolk
2)Newton Suffolk - which the census states is in the civil parish of Diss
3)Boxford
These locations have me very confused. I have had a peep at Google Earth and Diss and Boxford appear miles apart ... and Newton seems much closer to Boxford than to Diss so I'm not sure how it is 'in the parish of'?? ... how I wish I had a book of UK maps with me here in Spain! I don't get on too well with relative distances on Google Earth.

Another piece for the puzzle
James Arthur Spooner (Caroline's son) married Harriette Theresa Kempston
in 1874, Sept quarter.
Marriage registered Hackney, Greater London, Middlesex.
Vol. 1b Page 829.
I'll send for this certificate and then .. Hey Presto!! ... I'll know who James' father and Caroline's husband was.
I may still need help to sort out which family but let's wait and see what the cert says?
Thanks for help to date.
