I am seeking my grandmother, Lily Joplin nee White who was born in 1878 in the fair city of Portsmouth. She left the family home in 1912 leaving two children, Tom aged 7, and Margaret aged 5. She was a photographer by profession, and came from a very large Portsmouth family her father being Frederick William White a colour merchant and licenced victualler of Commercial Rd., Lily was last heard of in Surbiton.Relatives have made various suggestions as to what happened to her. One said she had gone down with the "Titanic" this I have proved not to be the case. Another said she had made her way to Hollywood to follow her career as a photographer and had taken the name of her niece Pearl White and became the silent movie actress of that name and heroine of the "Perils of Pauline " series. This is most unlikely bearing in mind when the film series started my Lily was still in the UK. Any Info will be welcome. Tony Prior |
