You don't need to order the certificates for births prior to 1908, marriages 1933 and deaths 1958. These can all be viewed online using the Scotlandspeople website. It is free to register at the site but you do need to buy credits to view search results and certificates. It does really work out quite cheap - if you get the correct entry first time it is only costing you £1.20 per certificate. With the information that you have you will probably get the correct one first time for the marriages and even the birth of Elizabeth. Neither Beith nor Lochwinnoch are particularly big places.

The beauty of using Scotlandspeople is no waiting! You find the entry and in less than 5 minutes you have all the details from the certificate.

When you get the birth certificate if you give the details on your thread here, then some of the Irish experts can point you in the right direction.

Regarding the religion bit for the marriages - in the first column of the certificate it will say something like "After publication according to the Forms of" followed by the name of the church eg. Church of Scotland, United Free Church of Scotland, Methodist Church etc

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction I found Francis' marriage records to Jane Lafferty 1886 & Martha McNeil 1880. Both marriages were presided over by Henry Glen (minister) & both state Francis parents were deceased. So can I assume they were presbytarian?.
Do I order the actual marriage certs from Scotland's people?, sorry to be a bit thick

Another point, if you get his marriage certificates you will be able to tell his religion - it will say who married him ie Priest of Minister and the certificates also give the place that the marriage took place. Often, at that time the Minister came to either the home of the Bride or Groom and married them there.

If you go onto Scotlandspeople website (Www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) and get the birth certificate of Elizabeth in 1865, it will tell you the date and place of the parents' marriage. This should point you to where in Ireland they came from.

Credits for Scotlandspeople cost a mere £6 for 30 - 1 credit to view search results and 5 to view certificate. So if you're careful and with the information you have here you should be able to view 5 certificates for your £6! good value or what?

Martyn...You wont be able to get Isaac's Birth Cert per se as it was long before Civil Reg. the best you can hope for is the Baptism Record from the appropriate Church...you still havent said if we are looking at RC/Pres.

Hi Erin
I have a record of birth (nov 22nd 1880) for James son of Francis Robb it lists Francis occupation as a curlingstone maker & his wife Martha (nee McNeil). It says they were living at Knowhead, Beith, Ayshire at the time.
I also have a marriage record of Francis Robb to Martha McNeil 1880. It lists Francis as aged 40 (widower) & living in Roebank, Beith. It also lists his father Isaac Robb, a farmer as deceased & Mother Martha Robb also deceased.
I have a record of Francis death 10th Dec 1910 aged 71. It lists his 3 former wives Martha McNeil, Jeannie Lafferty & Elizabeth Hamilton. He died in Beith but there is no record of his parents. The death was reported by his son James of Lochwinnoch.
That's about all I have & I am unsure of what religion they were.

Martyn...You cant do desperation when searching for your Irish Ancestors...!!!!

The Robb surname was predominent in the Counties of the North mainly Antrim and Down with some distribution in the Co.s Tyrone and Monaghan...that being said there were some to be found in the Co.Limerick....however the McCabes were also found mainly in the North so I would initially focus on those areas in the absence of info.to the contrary..... I would also be looking at the Presbyterian Records unless you know them to be RC...Have you got the MC of Francis and Jane... ?

Irish records are sketchy . you need to know the information you seek before you can get records!and thats only if they are available and a lot are not. what is on Francis death cert? usually a relative reports the death..so that may be a lead. Are you sure about the 3 marriages? divorce was extortionate and rarely available then ...have you looked for the deaths of any of the women? again the informant details may help.. what was his occupation? do you know if he was ever in the forces...maybe an avenue to look at? unfortunately you can only start from what you know and work backwards. good luck
