Hi Irene

Janet and the children travelled to Victoria aboard Sobraon in Dec 1874. She was only 22, and with her was Emily (10), Wm (3) and Henry (2).

This is her death in Victoria:

The other son of Rufus & Janet, Wm Hopkins LYONS, died aged 5 in 1876 at Indented Head, Victoria (reg 4375). (I think he is the one referred to as Rufus in the report above).

Son Henry died in 1936 aged 64 (reg 18086). Can't find a definite marriage for him.

Emily Jane (dau of Rufus & Emily nee MILES) died in 1957 at the ripe old age of 94 as JACKSON (reg 22365). Her husband was Clifton Rodway JACKSON; he died in Mooroopna in 1953 aged 93 (reg 23421). Both are buried at Kyabram Cemetery.

Emily's marriage to Clifton in 1884 in Victoria (reg 4473) shows her birthplace as Cheshire. Clifton was born in Beechworth, Victoria in 1861 (reg 17114), son of Thos Hinton & Hannah More nee PHELPS. Let me know if you would like the children of Emily & Clifton as well :-)

(4) Rufus D., eldest son of Capt. David and Jane B. Dixon Lyons, was also a shipmaster and excelled in his profession. He married Miss Emily Miles, of London, England, in 1855. They had one daughter named Emily. Mrs. Lyons died in 1865, aged 32 years. Capt. R. D. Lyons married for a second wife Miss Janet Thomson, of Liverpool, in 1870. They had two children named Rufus and Henry. Capt. Lyons died at Iquique in the year 1873. After her husband's death, Mrs. Lyons removed with her family to Beechworth, Victoria, Australia, where she died in September, 1885. Her son Rufus died in childhood.

Well done you super people. Found Janet Lyons second wife in Liverpool 1871 census and could not work out if it is her husband on previous page - seaman anyway. Thank you so much for your help. Regards Irene

Emily was born around 1830 at Lambeth but came from Stepney. Tower Hamlets.
I have her in Cheshire in 1861 census but cannot tie up the people she is living with as family members. She is listed as 26 a wife. I think she died in Manchester 1865. Irene

As a seaman he may not have been at home for the census have you looked on the 1881 census for his wife

I have the marriage certificate of my ancestor Emily Miles to Rufus Dixon Lyons
12/05/1855 St Judes Church, Whitechapel. He is a bachelor age 25, a seaman and the son of David Lyons a Seaman. I have not been able to find any records of Rufus other than he married again 1870 at Liverpool. Would any kind person find anything on him in the census or other records please. Many thanks Irene
