Rosie.

When using the 1911 census its often best not to put too much information even though you know its correct.

I use advanced search and name variants. This will pick up any names mistranscribed.

Check Joneseys thread giving advice about this. It shows how to do free searches. However to view the census page which is the one that gives information such as how many children were born and how many still living will cost you 30 credits. The advantage is you get to see the householders own handwriting. I have some where all the adults had filled in the information so several different handwriting which was a bonus

Thanks everyone - I haven't got the marriage certificate yet but will send off for it asap - I have older son Frederick M Lee's to Elsie Lovelock.

My next search is to find out who went to live in Canada as grandson Edward is a canadian resident - obviously his father is one of Matthew and Annie's sons - but which one.Maybe an illigitimate son of a daughter is another option. Now,where do I start looking?

I have tried the free search on 1911 site but so far no names and details of the people I have entered have come up - I even put in details I know are 100% correct and it still comes back with a non-match - what am I doing wrong -

We all have access to the site, and it is pay per view for all of us. It is free to search -

Do you use a secure server for payments?

Yes. We take your security very seriously. We use Worldpay, part of the Royal Bank of Scotland group to process your payments on our behalf and their site is well protected, using the latest encryption technology. We do not store your card details anywhere on our servers.

Can non-UK residents make payments and use the site?

Yes, customers living outside the UK can purchase PayAsYouGo credits online using a credit or debit card, in the same way as our UK-based customers. Payments can be made in your own currency by selecting the relevant option in the ’Choose currency‘ drop-down menu.

How much does it cost to view an image?

Viewing the images of the household pages uses 30 credits, which costs from £2.50 to £3.48, depending on the package of credits that you buy.

The images have all been scanned in very high quality colour – all previous censuses have only been available in black and white – giving much clearer images and greater legibility than previous censuses.

For this price you will also be able to view all the associated images for the family: this includes both sides of the household form ( RG 14); the page from the enumerator’s book, which lists the head of household for all the neighbouring buildings; summary statistical pages for the registation district and details of the enumerator’s walk (RG 78). For most searches this means that you will get at between two and seven images for your 30 credits.

How much does it cost to view a transcript?

For 10 credits (which cost between 83p and £1.16, depending on the package you buy) you can view a full transcript of everyone in the household, or a whole page of an institution. This compares with £1 to view a whole household on the official 1901 site, which was launched seven years ago.

There is also more information contained within the transcript this time around. You will get details about the length of the marriage (which will help you find registration details of the marriage). We have also transcribed every field of the census to enable very flexible searching.

Your paid images and transcripts are saved automatically in ’my records’, so you can return to them whenever you wish by logging on to the site, without needing to pay again.

For more information on credits, see About credits.

Hi Rosie,

Yes they do, the additions were, How many years married. How many children born to the marriage, How many still alive, How many have died.

As the 1911 census was released early, the end column was blanked out to protect peoples privacy...this column related to infirmaties.

Have sent you the image...so fingers crossed!

Going by what you found out for me Ann, do the 1911 census records hold more info than previously on all households ie length of mariage and number of total chldren etc? What other information is recorded on them?

Hi Rosie,

A bit of extra info from the 1911, states that Matthew and Annie have been married 36 years (1874/75) so the marrige you found is spot on, why not send for the cert and and if a fathers name is listed you may be able to find her on earlier census more easily.

The 1911 also states that there were 10 children born within the marriage 7 surviving and 3 having died. The family were living at 81 rathbone Street Canning Town East London.

Fred's occupation on his marriage certificate is pvte in 4th battalion middlesex regiment and he was born in c1887 in canning town, essex

Its Annie Caroline's details that are stumping me - even if I have the wrong Annie Caroline for Matthew there is still no one of the same name in 1861 or 71 census.I have found a birth for an Ann Caroline Evans in Bermondsey in 1858 and a death for Annie Caroline Lee in West Ham in 1935.Its driving me mad!!!

Here's hoping

Rosie Report 8 Oct 2009 15:22

Hi,
I am looking for information on Matthew R Lee b 1854 in Ely,Cambridgeshire and living in East Ham,Essex in 1901with wife Annie (Anne)Caroline and children Beatrice,Charles,Frederick m, and Thomas. Matthew's occupation was a greengrocer which is also on son Frederick's marriage certificate in 1909. I have Matthew on all the relevant census records up to 1901.

I have looked for Annie lee's maiden name and think it could be Evans. She is married and with Matthew in 1881which has her place of birth as Bermondsey in c1858. I found a Matthew R Lee in the marriage records and from that matched Anne Caroline Evans to him but I can find nothing on Annie in 1861 or 1871 when she would still have been living with her parents age about 13 so maybe its the wrong surname.I have found no one of that name at all so if anyone can help me here It would be great.

I am also looking for the whereabouts of Sarah Ann b1859 and George Lovelock b1864 in Great Bedwyn,Wilts.Again I have them on 1901 census and living in Alton Priors,Pewsey,Wilts but I dont know where they were after that.Sarah's maiden name was Grace and 6 children were with them in 1901.

Thank you

kind regards

Rosie
