I know she was born around 1877/1878 and married Thomas Clay. They lived in Blidworth. I have census results but am trying to find out her date of birth and if her mother was Charlotte Marshall and if so who her father was. Any help would be appreciated Thanks Wendy

Wendy, you need to put location - I bet very few people know where Bidworth is!! However, looking at googlemap it seems to come under Mansfield Notts.
There are 2 possible marriages, do you know which is yours?

Assuming you do not, you might need to get a birth cert for one of their children. This will confirm Harriet's maiden name and you can move on from there.

Wendy - You say you have all the census and you are trying to find if her mother was Charlotte Marshall. If you have all the census then you will see that the Harriet Marshall who married Thomas Clay in 1894 has her parents living with her and Thomas in 1901. That Thomas is a Road Labourer.

The Thomas Henry Clay who married Harriet Denman in 1892 is a Coal Miner, Hewer.

So what occupation is given for Thomas on the birth certificate of his child / children?

Again, if you have all the census you should know from the names of the children, which marriage is your Harriet.

Why do you think your Harriet is the daughter of Charlotte MArshall please?

I don't understand why Wendy was looking for Harriet's father's name if she had the census records. Pity she didn't wait until she had the time to stay by her computer for any questions!! David responded in 10 minutes but his questions have gone unanswered.

I know Harriet was a Marshall born in Blidworth Nottinghamshire and Married Thomas Clay but didn't know when. From information in the family I think it is not the Thomas H Clay as the census info from the other Thomas Clay matches.

Thanks for the marriage date will follow this up.
In the 1881 census records Harriet is living with her grandfather and his son William and daughter Charlotte both were shown as single I am trying to find out who her mother and father were.
Next step is probably marriage certificate and finding Harriets birth certificate.

What you seem to be assuming is that Harriet was illegitemate.

That may be, but you need to know what happened to all of Edmund and Harriets children to discount them:

The marriage cert is definitely the way to go, but don't be surprised if the fathers info is blank or even someone you've never heard of. Sometimes fathers are invented for decorum.

If the marriage cert is a dead end, then you could order the birth cert with the added search of mother Charlotte. I think that costs about £3.

I can't see the family in 1861 to check if there are anymore daughters who could be your Harriet's mother but there is that Ann on the 1871 census above. Could be?? If she married later she may have left her unmarried sister Charlotte to bring up Harriet.

Thanks for the information and tips I think you are right and I shouldn't jump to any conclusions. tried to get Harriets birth cert today but records office couldn't find it but said some records have been moved to chesterfield or basford they were busy so said they would try and check and get back to me will go in later this week to chase up and order marriage cert as well. Hopefully will get more info then.
Have had a reply from Sharon who has info re the baptism record for Harriet this seems to say Charlotte as Mother but no father entered. Will keep up the search. Thanks again Wendy
