Tombul, Yes that sounds right i will most probably have to find & buy the certificates for roberts siblings in order to find any possible living relatives from 1908 till now. Unfortunately i do not have any information about his immediate family ie his mother/fathers/grandparents etc so i cannot yet begin to search the census for his relatves or figure out which certificates i should purchase .
I have quite a bit of information on my gran Ethel Ward Halliday, her father was killed in accident in 1932 so from there i have managed to work my way backwards & gather parents/grandparents. This is who i have been searching for in the census, the Halliday children as i have a few generations of parents & missing lots of children.
If I knew Roberts parents names then i would hopefully be able to look up thier birth dates & find his ancesters from there. I hope this makes sense Sharon.
Ps... Robert was in the army when he married my gran.

Robert was born in 1916 and his parents were married in 1915. I presume any of Robert's siblings would be born after that date. Therefore they will not appear in the census until 1921 which will not be available until 2021.

Is it Robert's father's siblings you are hoping to find from the census?

Sharon Report 12 Nov 2009 14:57

Thats great thanx. I will now be able to find the children from the census & work out thier year of birth & search for them on the register to fill in my gaps that should keep me busy tree building till i get the details for my grandads side.
It all gets a bit confusing but so worth it.

Sharon "Do" is the abbreviation for Ditto. It means that the surname is the same as the person above i.e

John Smith
Jane Do
Robert Do

would all have the same surname as John - they would all be Smiths.

Thank you again, I will post the details when i receive the certificates.

I have been lucky enough to find my late grandmothers family as far back as around 1820 only missing the siblings.

I have been searching the census for her family members to find children & there seems to be a lot of do's ie janet do? in the lists of names is this an old form of " " . Im not sure if im being thick or if Do was a common surname or does this mean surname unknown.

Apprecciate you expertise, family history is so interesting & addictive!

Sharon

Post the details from his birth certificate, when you get it. If you don't have a sub for ancestry, someone will look for his parent's families for you on the 1901 census. That narrows the year and place of birth for you to get certificates from Scotlandspeople. His birth certificate will give you the date and place of his parents marriage which you can then look up on Scotlandspeople. Again if you post all the details you can please if you need census look ups.
