Eleanor Grey and John Grey

Hi Choccy

Thanks for that, with this info I am able to match it with earlier help and I would say Margaret Gledson is the obvious spouse for John William Grey. So the birth certificate for Eleanor that I already have must be the correct one as Margaret Gledson is her mother.

Eleanor must have told porkies on her wedding day making herself 20 years old.

Choccy you do not say what their address is on the 1911 census!

Kindest Regards

Janice

..I will have to decide which John William Grey and spouse to choose as the likely parents before I send for marriage certificate
.
More checks on the 1911 census are needed to pick up the fact John William Grey was a Bricklyer as his profession. If someone finds that then I am on a winner.

Anyone out there able to do check for me as do not have full membership and I have bought credits in the past only to find I have wasted my time and came up wrong.

Cheers all.

Maureen

Thanks for the info on the 1911 Census.

If the birth certificate I have for Eleanor Grey turns out to be the right one it shows Margaret Gledson as her mother and John William Grey as her father.

It is just the age that is throwing me, marriage certificate on 3rd March 1923 she is 20 years old. Yet the birth certificate I have obtained has 20th June 1903 as her birth date meaning she would not be 20 until June 1923

Regards

Janice.

Hi

The spouse my grandfather was 24 on the marriage certificate, he was born 31 Aug 1899, so everything matches there.

.... and anyway, many of our ancestors didn't always tell the truth about their age on a marriage certificate!

She could well have stretched the truth by about 6 months!

How old was Robert when they married?

One spouse being quite a bit older than the other is often one reason why ages are changed.

Phyllis, the baby on the 1911, has Gledson as her middle name ..... and that is often an indication that it is a family name.

Hi

Eleanor Grey GRO Ref 10b 337

I have the birth certificate for the above ref, date of birth 20th June 1903 surely that means on her marriage certificate her age would be 19 as she would not turn 20 until 20th June 1923.

I am missing something here. On said birth certificate her mother was Margaret (NeeGledson) Grey and her father was John William Grey profession Coal Miner.

They are living at 8 Bowes Street which is Blyth Northumberland.

What do you all think.

Don't forget that someone who says they are 20 in March 1923 ............ could be 20 years old that day OR 20 years 11 months and 30 days, ie turning 21 the next day!

so they could have been born between March 1903 and March 1904

have you managed to spot her on the 1911 census ?

She may be less than 20 ?
OR not registered as Grey ?

Janice

Janice Report 18 Nov 2009 17:16

Eleanor Grey was my grandmother she married Robert Lamberth on 3rd MARCH 1923, on the marriage certificate she is 20 years old and living in Blyth Northumberland.

I have twice sent for what I thought could be her birth certificate to find out her mother's name and maiden name, both times wrong.

The first was:

Eleanor Grey Newcastle 10b 337 Sep QTR 1903 , of course that was wrong as I had not took into account her age in March 1923 on her marriage certificate.

Second attempt:

Eleanor Grey Newcastle 10b 13 March QTR 1902, guess what this was wrong as this Eleanor had been born Dec 1901 and the birth was registered in January 1902 and her father's name was Robert Grey, all together a mile out.

I have done more GRO checks and all I can find is:

Eleanor GRAY Newcstle T 10b 156 March QTR 1903

This possibly could be her with an incorrect spelling of her surname.

I have what I think is her father's birth as:

John Grey Tynemouth 10b 201 March QTR 1866

On the 1871 Census he shows his birthplace as Houghton Le Spring Durham.

Also:

John William Grey:

Marriage South Shields 10a 1048 March QTR 1901

I did not know my grandmother Eleanor and the family did not speak of her as she left the marital home and four young children behind.

It is a lot to ask for help but I am desperate to find out about her as I think when she went away she may have had more children, my relatives.

Please do a look up if you are at the Records Office and many thanks if you take the time.

Kindest regards

Janice Lamberth
