Hi Ann,
I have looked for the 'Liverpool' Ann,John and James on the various censuses without success. I am rapidly being drawn to the conclusion that John wasn't born in Huddersfield after all. It is possible that he never knew where he was born and just guessed.
I will keep you posted,
Cheers Frank

it is possible that they are brother & sister but to be your John the occupation still does not fit. Can you find the same people in 1871 or 1891?

Hi Lancashireann
Is it possible that Ann and John on the 1881 census are brother and sister rather than mother and son, which they obviously aren't. if the ages are correct?
Cheers Frank

the only thing wrong with the Netherfield Rd one is his occupation which is shop assistant to his mother who is described as a provision dealer. This again does not fit with being an engineer in 1882.
The only one that I can find which fits is that original Chorley one (occupation of father James & son John both engine tenters in a cotton mill) but he was not born until 1868 which is too late.
(tears hair in frustration!)

Hi Lancashireann and Freewheel
It would appear that whilst we are no nearer finding John's birthplace, the contact I have made via GR Trees confirms that his wife is Ada Seddon's (nee Kemp) first cousin 3 times removed. It's a pity he has no further information.
Is it possible that we have part of the right family but Julia isn't John's mother? For some reason Gladys has been told that John's mother was called Ann. I know that on the 1881 census Lancashireann found a Yorkshire born Ann Seddon with sons John and James living off Netherfield Rd in Liverpool. This might explain why John was living in Liverpool when he married Ada!!
Cheers Frank

Hi Lancashireann,
Once again, many thanks for all your help. As I do have an Ancestry sub I will check it out and let you know. what turns up.
Freewheel; I took your advice and looked at Seddon's on GR's trees. I have had a couple of replies so far, one of which was a match. Unfortunately it was on the Kemp side; John's wife's family and they had little or no information to add other than they had a an Ada born in 1864 to William and Ann Marie. They didn't know who Ada married. I checked with Gladys and she confirmed that they were her parents.
Enjoy your evening. Will post tomorrow.

re the comment about the 1881 census
James would surely have been a young brother to John - not a mistranscription
John would have been age 17 and possible living away from home - if he was an apprentice they often lived with the master
BUT if in 1871 John's father was an engineer (as per census) and in 1882 he was an engineer why is he described as a master baker in that 1881
This does make it seem as if that is not the right family. I checked the original index fiches yesterday and it is not a mistranscription though it could have been mistranscribed onto the index. Is the original page avilable to view in ancestry - I don't have a sub

Hi Everyone, I have spoken to Gladys, who confirms that at the time of his marriage, John Seddon was employed as a boiler worker and that Mary and William Lomax - Ada's sister and brother in law - were witnesses.

Hi Everyone,
Many thanks for all your sterling woork. It is much appreciated. Sorry for the delay in replying. I was tied up with something else yesterday
I have just finished speaking to Gladys Seddon, John's granddaughter, who confirms that on John's mc his father's occupation isgiven as engineer.. She will let me know the names of his witnesses later.
Ann:/ Freewheel Looking at the 2 census records for 1871 and 1881 John's age goes from 7 to 4!! I suspect that the 1881 census could have been mistranscribed. . Another odd thing is that in1881 John appears as James!!
Another problem we seem to have is that if John was born in 1864, he would have been 18 when he married Ada in 1882.. However, according to his mc he was 20, which would give his birth year as 1862!!
Freewheel: Thanks for the tip to have a;look at Family Rees on the GR site. As I am in work at present I will do his from home.
Right, I had beter get back to work.!! Will catch up later.
Have agood day, Frank

According to his other thread, Frank is not related to these people - he is looking on behalf of someone else, so that may explain the lack of feedback

I found this 1881 which appears to be the same family
James SEDDON Head M Male 37 Manchester Journeyman Baker Julia SEDDON Wife M Female 35 Manchester Louisa SEDDON Daur U Female 7 Manchester Scholar James SEDDON Son U Male 4 Manchester Scholar Ada SEDDON Daur U Female 2 Manchester
Source Information: Dwelling 33 Daisey St Census Place Hulme, Lancashire, England Family History Library Film 1341938 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 3926 / 110 Page Number 33
however I am rather confused about James occupation. In 1871 he was an engine smith - factory, now he is a journeyman baker which means he has served an apprenticeship as a baker - strange change of occupation & I would have thought took a few years to do
are we searching the right John Seddon this time (there are rather a lot of them) and I did a lot of work on the last one which turned out to be the wrong one (edit - sorry Frank, only just seen your message explaining the last one)

PM received - I asked Frank to post it on here, but he hasn't yet.............
Basically, as I said, I am primarily researching the Seddon family in general and John Seddon in particular.. I know that John was born circa 1864, although we have yet to confim where. He married Ada Kemp in Liverpool in 1882 and by 1911 they were living in Sellar St. Kirkdale. According to his mc his father's name was James.
The problem is, on the 1891 census his birthplace is given as Manchester but o nthe next two its states Huddersfield!!
One of John and Ada's daughters, also Ada, married into the Cookson family and I am hoping that there isa living Cookson who might be able to shed some light on their in-laws

Forenames, dates of birth etc are essential. But be careful about putting anything on here which may relate to living people.......
When/how did the 'link' to Seddon occur?

Hi I am trying to find information on the Cookson family of Newby St vWalton, Liverpool 4.
I know the family has lived in the area for a number of generations and were certainly there as recently as the 1980's.
They are linked by marriage to the family ofJohn Seddon, whom I am also researching
Any help would be appreciated.
