Did an all-census search for no name, born in Langley, Oxfordshire. Here they are in 1871 in Wargrave:

James Walts 80 (c 1791 - he got older!)
Mary Walts 66
Mary Ann Walts 32 - daughter
William Walts 2 - grandson
Harry Norris 6 - boarder

JaneyCanuck

There are two other WATTS-s in Wargrave in 1841 you might take a look at as possible siblings.

John Watts 45 (c1796)
Ann Watts 35
Samuel Watts 11
James Watts 9
John Watts 6
Edward Watts 3
Mary Ann Watts 1

William Watts 25 (c 1816)
Jane Watts 25
William Watts 2
Charles Watts 6 Mo

The names James, William and Charles, while not unusual, recur.

Both of those are shown as born in county, but then so is your James in 1841.

It seems James, like many people in the day, got younger as he got older. ;)

Lianne

Lianne Report 30 Nov 2009 22:35

Thank you all for looking-it seems James was different ages...??

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Nov 2009 22:28

This could be the birth of Mary Ann who was 3 in 1841:

Births Sep 1837
Watts Mary Ann Wokingham 6 220

If the father's name matched, that would give you the mother's surname, and might help in searching for more info about the couple.

Well, no problem in 1861. WATTS born in Langley gets:

Name: James Watts
Age: 61
Estimated birth year: abt 1800
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Mary
Where born: Langley, Oxfordshire, England

Name: Mary Watts
Age: 54
Estimated birth year: abt 1807
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: James
Where born: Hughendon, Buckinghamshire, England

Civil parish: Wargrave
Ecclesiastical parish: Knowl Hill and Wargrave
County/Island: Berkshire
Registration district: Wokingham

James Watts 61
Mary Watts 54
Allis Blackhall 6 - boarder
Leonard Thornton 1 - no relationship stated

Ages seem to have been reversed in one instance or the other.

>>> James was recorded as *57* in the 1851, not 37, I would say.

This seems to be the household in 1841 in Wargrave:

James Watts 44
Mary Watts 33
Martha Watts 24
Martha Watts 14
Elizabeth Watts 8
Charles Watts 6
Mary Watts 3
Heptzibah Watts 8 Mo

James's age was a thing of variable geometry, it seems.

Two Marthas? No relationships stated in 1841. Maybe James and Mary had both been previously married?

That 1861 isn't BUSSELL, it's BURRELL.

Marriages Jun 1857
Burrell Thomas Marylebone 1a 690
Watts Elizabeth Marylebone 1A 690

Just adding up info, Stephen.

Ancestry is pitching some kind of fit.

I'm trying to search the 1851 for any WATTS born in Langley, Oxfordshire -- who might be a sibling of your James, or a parent even.

Ancestry is flatly refusing to give me any results, even your James. Maybe try again later ...

I edited above to add the 1871 for the children.

Here's Joseph in 1861 in St Lawrence, Reading:

Joseph Watts 31
Jane Watts 34
William Watts 10 Mo
Sarah Allin 77
Charles Watts 25 - brother
John Allin 14

Odd, but this looks like brother William in 1861:

Name: William Watts
Age: 18
Estimated birth year: abt 1843
Relation: Brother
Gender: Male
Where born: Wargrave, Berkshire, England

Civil parish: St Marylebone

Thomas Bussell 39 - born Essex
Elizabeth Bussell 28 - born Berks, Easly?
William Watts 18

I have no clue why Ancestry refused to produce that 1851 for me no matter what I tried!

Stephen, you're the one who told us what the 1851 census said! It's the 1861 you want, right?

We all like to see the stuff in standard format for the info it gives.

I'm not seeing them in the 1851 by the info you have given. The big question is: where were they in 1851? Where are the children in 1871? One kind of needs to know where to look for them.

Right, 1871, in St Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire

Joseph Watts 40 - widower, born Berks
William Watts 28 - brother, born Berks Knowlstill
Rebecca Watts 24 - sister, borh Berks Knowlstill

Lianne Report 30 Nov 2009 21:34

I am trying to find James Watts and wife Mary. On the 1851 census it says James born Langley,Oxfordshire wife Mary born Hughenden,Berks with their 4 children. Their daughter Rebecca born 1847 is servant to James and Mary Readings aged 14yrs. By 1871 William and Rebecca seem to be with a brother Joseph born c1830 Berkshire-cant find his baptism to check the parents. Any help to where parents are-Thanks
