Thanks for that Richard. As alviegal says its lovely to know that little bit of info.

Poor Rebecca, how sad is that? Workhouses were such horrible places.

Good luck with further research and have a Merry Christmas.

Well done Ozi! Looks like you may have cracked it!

And thank you Richard for that wonderful bit of history. It makes such a difference when you can connect stories like that to an ancestor...definitely puts flesh on the bones, so to speak.

It sounds horrendous what that poor man had to endure and his poor wife, being thrown into the workhouse after his death!! We really don't appreciate how lucky we are in this day and age.

By coincidence I happened to be reading an article on Napoleon and the Hougeaumant farmhouse just the other day.

Have a wonderful Christmas.

Richard Report 20 Dec 2009 13:03

A big thankyou to everyone who replied to my request, it certainly looks like Rebecca's maiden name was Bosley/Boseley.
John Snead served right through the Penninsular War in Spain and Portugal and helped deffend Hougeaumant farmhouse at Waterloo. During the battle he was hit in the thigh by a grapeshot ball and passed out and it was not until two days and nights later that he was found to still be alive. He had 22 splinters of bone dug out without anaesthetic. He and Rebecca were given an almshouse where they lived and raised a family.
He died in 1860 and as Hereford's last Waterloo veteran he was buried with full military honours and a little box with 22 splinters of bone in it. The almshouse went with John and when he died Rebecca was thrown out and ended up in the workhouse where she died in 1869.
Once again thankyou to everyone Richard

Terrific, alviegal.

So if Rebecca who marries William Turner is a daughter of Rebecca and David Luxam, and Sarah is their daughter, then it's a heavy intimation that Eliza is also a daughter of Rebecca and David.

All roads lead to Hereford it seems.

I'm not sure what you mean, Heather.

I'm assuming Eliza born Westminster is Rebecca's daughter from her first marriage. Is that what you're saying too?

There's a possibility that Rebecca was a widow. Pallot's Index card has 'w' after her name.

There is also a marriage of a Rebecca Bosley to a David Luxam but I don't have access to the details.

There are records at the National Archives for a John Snead of 1st Foot Guards. He served 1806-1816, was 31 when discharged and was born in Hereford. Is this him? His Army records are unlikely to give any info about his marriage though.

You could try the Army marriages on Findmypast, although they are far from complete.

Hi

I have just found a Jns Snead of 3rd Battn. Grenadier Regt. Foot Gards serving in Lt. Col Reeve's Company in the Waterloo Medal Roll for 1815. He was a Corporal. To be awared this means he served at one of the following battles, Ligny, Bras and Waterloo between 16 - 18th June 1815.

what do you think?

Richard

Richard Report 17 Dec 2009 17:40

John Snead served in the 1st Foot Guards(Grenadier Guards) throughout the Napoleonic wars. He returned home to Hereford
with a wife Rebecca and their first child that I know of was born in 1818. From the census I know that Rebecca was from Lambeth
but I do not know where they got married, possibly Lambeth or even Spain, Portugal or Belgium, can anyone give me any pointers where to start looking?
